I need to make a new website for it though. Photobucket runs out of bandwidth on the days many people start reading the book again, so I'm wondering if anyone has better recommendations of where I can have the whole 300+ page comic uploaded.

I've been busy with doing other creative projects too, and one of them was a short film for Victoria Court's Director's Cut Challenge. The short film is on youtube and a winner will be chosen with 60% of the score based on the number of hits the video gets. Lastly, I've been meaning to work on a new online comic. One that tackles matters that are a bit more on the mature side (read, possible adult situations and issues) and I was wondering if anyone knows of a site where such a comic can be hosted without problems. Nudity and sexual situations will be illustrated and tackled in such a book.

“It’s something to think of, for those who want to make comics—there’s no money, no market for our dreams to come true at the level we want them to, so we have to compromise,” said David.
Producing cheap zines for comics conventions is a compromise, he said. So is finding time in between one’s other priorities to continue working on one’s stories, as was the case with Tan and Baldisimo.
“You can find a way to do it even with work,” he said. “The plans you have in mind, that epic you’ve been thinking of since you were 16 years old, you don’t have to finish all that in a month. You just have to work on it, work on your comics, even while being realistic about your situation.”
“You might have to find a job, or do something else in between that thing you really want to do. For everyone with that kind of experience—hang in there.”

Leinil Francis Yu secret comic project with Mark Millar and Matthew Vaugh

Sure, we know about Mark Millar's plans to direct a mysterious superhero movie, and we've heard about the "Kick-Ass" sequel (titled "Balls to the Wall"), but now it looks like we have another project on the horizon from Millar and director Matthew Vaughn.

The surprise? It's not the long-rumored "American Jesus" adaptation or his upcoming, controversial superhero series "Nemesis."

"Matthew and I are going to do two new projects, and they'll be quite interesting for people who are looking for us to get together and do a big, widescreen superhero picture," Millar told MTV News during this weekend's South by Southwest Film Festival.

In a separate interview conducted earlier in the day, Vaughn had hinted at the mysterious project and indicated that it was of a "superhero sensibility" rather than a standard superhero film. Millar agreed with that description, and offered up some information about the source material it will draw from.

"This is an adaptation of a book that Leinil Francis Yu and I are doing," he said. "It will be out in September as well. I can't divulge the name yet. I don't want it to get lost in the 'Kick-Ass' publicity, but this will be the next thing after 'Kick-Ass.'"

"Nobody knows any of the content yet," he added. "Even the publishers don't know. We're keeping it quiet and we're walking on the project independently."

Millar said the success of "Wanted" and "Kick-Ass" have him concentrating more intently on inventing new universes instead of treading familiar water.

"I think we've just had a little taste of how cool it is — instead of doing other people's characters and characters that have been around 40 or 70 years — to create something for this generation," he said. "There's a gap in the market. It's been a long time since someone created a new superhero."

Outlining his plans for the coming year, Millar said he has three new properties he's planning to develop as films, along with Hollywood interest in his controversial "Nemesis" series that imagines a scenario in which a Bruce Wayne-like character actually becomes a supervillain a la The Joker. The series has been the target of much buzz and industry controversy, as promotional art for the Marvel series clearly riffs on the popular DC characters.

"Already we have directors lining up for 'Nemesis,' the book that's out in a couple of weeks' time," said Millar. "It's very exciting. It must be how Stan [Lee] felt, I suppose, back in the early '60s. He's creating all these books and luckily people are liking them."

Ambush turns 4--with a bang!

After 4 years of its weekly run in Manila Bulletin Sunday Entertainment section and building its own fan base (young and old), the comic strip “Ambush” is now a published mini-graphic novel. Titled “Ambush: Parents Trapped”, creator Andrew Villar comes up with an indie comics compilation of the best strips in the series, combined with new story lines.

Ambush is the brainchild of artist Andrew Villar, created at a time when just about everyone is screaming for "girl power" and "women empowerment". So when he saw the comeback of Mars Ravelos' Darna in many forms, along with the launch of six or more Pinoy male heroes like Mulawin and Panday,his long-time vision of introducing a new breed of Filipina superheroine pushed him to turn his doodle-ideas into form and color. Glyphwall Webmaster Paul Quiambao says he believes Ambush represents a truly Pinoy value, that is, filial or family love and honor. Ambush is the tough and good gal she is, because her parents raised to be one. She rubs this off to her friends and teammates—the
members of Bravo Co., her barkada during the day, and allies when in need.

On April 10, 2010 at 6 p.m., Mag:net Café will launch “Ambush: Parents Trapped” at Mag:net Café Katipunan. The event will feature an exhibit of original artworks and reprints of “Ambush”. Singers and musicians Cookie Chua and Lito Crisostomo, among others, will grace the event. Artists from Samahang Kartunista ng Pilipinas (SKP) and Manila Bulletin will also be present at the event in full of support of “Ambush”.

But the real highlight of the night would be the “Meet-and-Greet Ambush”, where fans and friends will be able to shake hands and meet their favorite comics heroine—in the flesh. The teen super hero, who epitomizes the new-generation Filipina, defending the good and crushing the villains of todaywill don her battle suit, not to fight evil for one night, but to mingle with Pinoy comics fans and supporters.

The book was launched a few weeks ago, and hope I can grab this once it becomes available in our local bookstore, I heard that they are planning to have a book tour this March 2010.

This book brings together sixty of the best Filipino artists from here and abroad. They have come from various fields: comics, cartoons, animation, gaming and graphic design in the hopes that, in their own way, they may be able to help others who were hit the hardest by these calamities and through their art, inspire others to be heroes themselves.

Pilipino Komiks compilation of Lapu Lapu komiks by Francisco V. Coching

I just found this poster in my Facebook and it was posted by a 2nd degree network and I'm surprised that they re-published and compiled a comics by Atlas Publishing, it's one of the early komiks done by our comics master Francisco V. Coching. I went to Gerry's blog to confirm its availability and saw some information that the compiled comics priced at Php120 is already available in all National Bookstore outlets. The Graphic novel was published and released during the 50's and I'm glad that Atlas Publishing is back again re-releasing the great comics with awesome artworks done by Francisco Coching.

I already finished reading the graphic novel book "El Indio", also written and drawn by Francisco Coching, it was the best book ever for me, the artwork is very timeless and project a true artstyle by Filipinos in comics. I also missed the launching event of the book last week at National Museum, but saw Dennis Villegas' blog post via Gerry's blog about his coverage of the event, really awesome talaga!

Wolverine Manga under Del Rey Manga will be available in the Philippines in the next coming weeks, I also heard from Wilson Tortosa from the Alamat mailing list that there's a book signing event on plan with Comic Odyssey, will post the details of the book signing event of Wolverine Manga after we receive info from Sandy of Comic Odyssey.

As I remember, Wilson is working on this manga since last year around May 2009. And glad that they manga will be released here in our local comic stores.

At the Closing Exhibit of Chaos and AMbushed, we will be hosting an acoustic interlude for our father, Tony Santos Jr., on February 28, 5-9pm at the Conspiracy Bar in Visayas Ave.

My friend Jori saw the teaser trailer in the cinema, and I just can't believe myself that they will be producing a remake of Ang Panday, then YouTube answered all my questions.

Above is the teaser trailer of a new revamp (or re-issue or modern take) for the classic comics and movie "Ang Panday" which FPJ originally fill its boots as the first Panday ( blacksmith). But after the death of the action king FPJ, another actor inherits the mighty sword and that is Bong Revilla Jr. I remember that I watched the last (and good one) movie of the Panday movie series, starring Bong for the movie "Dugo ng Panday", I just forgot his characters back then.. But now, here in the 2009 remake, looks like Bong will be playing the main Panday / character of Flavio.

The teaser trailer looks good, kinda Dragon ball Z-ish ahhaha. Hope they can bring a kick ass villain like Lizardo, the aliens, zombies, and many more. and ohhh. I'm expect a good CGI effect here, hope more great than Resiklo and Exodus.

Im a big Panday fan, so I will be waiting for its development.

I went to the comic book launching of "Dead of Night featuring Werewolf by Night #1" and it is also the autograph signing of Mico Suayan, who is our penciler for that comics, published under Marvel Comics, and written by Duane Swierczynski. I just read some comic reviews last wednesday here on the net, and they say that the art of Mico here for Werewolf by Night is a little bit tone down, and because many of you are familiar with his works in Moonknight, you might get an idea here for looking a new style that Mico wants to deliver, and I just confirmed it with him awhile ago that he is working on this new style, more on realistic and not too edgy like what he did for Moonknight.

It was a great day for comics once again, and marvelous conversation with the artist, and we were joined by Edgat Tadeo and it was followed by Jay Anacleto after his comic signing event in another venut later that evening. Thanks to Comic Odyssey for event and also allowing us to hang out in the shop ahhaha. grab the book and check it out.

I failed to attend the opening event of Tony De Zuniga's Super Heroes 2 at the Crucible in Megamall. I'm glad that our friend Ernest Hernandez took some cool photo coverage and shared to us. Love to see new painting artworks done by Tony De Zuniga, and from here at home, by looking at it, my favorite piece is the Shanna painting with the big cat behind. There is also Vampirella for my 2nd favorite set and finally the Red Sonja with a giant iguana, I really like his drawing on female characters, and from the look of it, very classic and sexy.

It is all comics characters for this year, compare to last year, it was a mix up of comic characters like Jonah Hex, Red Sonja and Batman, mixed with still life paintings.

The exhibit is til January 29, 2009. So visit the Crucible gallery, check it out..and you might have an interest in purchasing some of the greatest piece of comics artwork by artist extraordinaire Tony De Zuniga.

We will be receiving membership applications for Ang I.N.K. (Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan.) Deadline is February 13, 2009. Your application should include:

1. Accomplished application form. (text or e-mail me so I could send you an electronic copy.)
2. Applicants are asked to conceptualize a distinctly contemporary Filipino aesthetic to any of the following stories: Hansel & Gretel, Three Little Pigs, or Little Red Riding Hood. The illustrator must:

a. respect the original spirit of the story
b. anticipate story text place into their page design (dummy text may be used)
c. illustrate at least one full-color spread of the story that best exhibits the aesthetic and your skill.
(recommended size & orientation: 8 1/2 x 11inches landscape)
d. illustrate one or two bond papers showing eight to ten thumbnails
depicting your interpretation of the selected story. Legible. Color is unnecessary.

Open to Filipino citizens only. Those residing outside the Philippines need not apply.
The application should be mailed or submitted in a manila envelope, or a similar sized envelope with your name and address indicated on the envelope. Send original artworks at your own risk. All paper, works, and packaging submitted to INK for screening will not be returned to any applicant.

DC comics writer for Teen Titans Go! and Ninja Scroll, J.Torres joins Oni Press comics artist Elbert Or for a comic book signing event and also preview of their team up project for Oni Press entitled "Lola: A Ghost Story", that will be available this Summer 2009 in Comic Odyssey and all comic shops.

I arrived late for the comic book signing, but on time to meet and have a talk with J. Torres (J. is for Joseph) at the Comic Odyssey in Robinsons Galeria, me and Mark surfed the MRT just to reach there almost on time to meet the comics star after attending an afternoon event in Manila. The comic shop is still full with comics fans, buyers and artists, and it looks like that it is another comic convention forming inside the mall. Sandy Sansolis, owner of the store brought us to this table full of comics and gave us copies of Teen Titans Go, Ninja Scroll and X-men Ronins. It was great to have comics to sign, because I told Mark and Sandy that I got a lot of DC for kids comics at home and failed to bring it with me and it has reprints of Justice League Unlimited and Teen Titans Go. Here's the first look at my next project for Oni Press, the graphic novel Lola: A Ghost Story. "Lola" is the Tagalog (Filipino) word for grandmother and this story is loosely based on some tall tales about my own maternal grandmother's childhood, some other family "history," as well as some folklore and mythology from the Philippines.

The artist of Lola is the multi-talented Elbert Or, whose blog can be found here. While you're there, make sure to check out his webcomics, which can be accessed from the right hand sidebar. The effectively minimalist and iconic Love and Heartbreak is probably my favourite one, but Camy and Me is also very charming and fun.

This is what happens if I failed to attend a comic book event, and I know that everyone will be there and I didn't expected that it will turn like a mini comic convention ehhhee, congrats to all and nice to see that everyone is getting busy doing comics and fans being active in these events. Jay Anacleto was there as the main highlight of the event for the promotion of the sequel of Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross's Marvels, and its Jay Anacleto's turn to wear the crown as the artist for the Marvels 2. And the comics is already SOLD OUT...and I don't have my own copy. Me and Mark decided to check out in Planet X comics, but failed...still copies are sold out.

Also Gerry shared to us photos of the event, and wow! Tony de Zuniga was there to sign comics, Leinil Yu was there too for Secret Invasion 8, Gerry Alanguilan for Elmer comics, and Edgar Tadeo. Life on a Pencil : Komikon 2008 coverage

November 22nd 2008 was marked as the Fourth Annual Filipino Komiks Convention or KOMIKON which celebrates Filipino comics enthusiast, hobbyist, collectors, companies and more. The venue of the event was once again successfully celebrated at University of the Philippines' Bahay ng Aliumni in Quezon City.

Hooh! Quezon City, another time and energy consuming trip from my hometown Dasmariñas in Cavite but everything was "worth" it. It's already the 24th day of November 2008 Monday,my proud mama's birthday. It took me a while to post this because of again technical Operating system problems (when will the conflicts eND?!!). Okay enough rambling and on with the coverage of the 4th Annual Komikon 2008.

I started leaving for Cavite at around 6:30 in the morning to avoid being stuck with the heavy traffic (and believe me when you get stuck in traffic here in the Philippines, you will be stuck for hours.). To my surprise, the trip was almost flawless and the bus I took only encountered a few light traffic along the way, making the trip from Dasmariñas Cavite to Diliman Quezon City a fast one (two hours or less to be precise).
For Caviteños like me who wanted to go to University of the Philippines Diliman Quezon City, here is the right economic route to take (Thanks to Azrael for this transportaion guide):

From Dasmariñas Town Proper ride a bus until Pasay LRT/MRT Station. From thrn on ride a bus heading to SM Fairview and request the bus conductor to drop you off Philcoa. *** From Philcoa ride a jeepney taking the "UP ikot" route. Finally ask and request the jeepney driver to drop you off at the Bahay ng Alumni.

*** I don't know if I've been duped or what but the driver drop me off in some point so I still took a jeep going to Philcoa. Stupidity will really cost you about eight pesos more hahahaha

Komikon 2008 blog coverage and updates

I went to the Komikon 2008 yesterday as a media man and I’m there to do a photo coverage of the event and also to support Filipino komiks. I arrived late and I’m already getting worried that some komiks that I’m planning to grab might be out of stock, so I prayed and let the komiks gods help me arrive on time and discard away from bad elements on my way to UP Diliman. As soon as I receive my media ID pass at the registration area, I started to roam around and took some photos, the venue is already jam packed and I position myself next to a portable air cooler just to absorb some cold air and prepare for a hot and crowded convention for Filipino Komiks.

“Babies” Boom: Arnold Arre showcases his best work yet

Martial Law Babies / 286 pages / black & white

Sometimes, approached like a lost tribe, a “martial law baby” is more a state of mind than a general distinction.

These are people, once young, now not so, who were disenfranchised by the abrupt disappearance of the Japanese robot anime shows “Voltes V” most notoriously, among other artifacts.

Having grown up under the Marcos regime’s gloved gauntlet, these babies carried it’s shadow with them long after the Marcoses were out of power. Having once lost their heroes, the ystruggle to save others and themselves.

This is literary territory mined magnificently by Katrina Tuvera (in fiction) and Jessica Zafra (in essays) among others. Now, award-winning comic book creator Arnold Arre (“The Mythology Class”) explores this precious space in his new, substantial graphic novel “Martial Law babies” (Nautilus Comics, Mandaluyong City, 2008, 286 pages).

LOVE LETTER
“We’re hopeless romantics,” Arre’s characters state. “We’re expert daydreamers.”
In a love letter to his generation, Arre distills that treacherous journey through the eyes of narrator Allan, poetic and put-upon, and his barkada – acerbic Rebecca, fun-loving Francis and privileged Carol – from their short pants days in the 70s to the interminable future.

A seemingly innocuous appearance on the “Uncle Bobby Lucky Club” TV show leads to divergent paths for the friends, all the way to college in the University of the Philippines, where their circle grows and their worlds grow complicated.

Allan bears witness as grownup life threatens to stealthily overcome them, even as he attempts to come to grips with a childhood crush on the campus heartthrob that relentlessly haunts him. Then things get worse.
Loss, departures, and other traps are sprung as the friends drift inexorably apart, a tribe forced to become nomadic. Allan drifts as well, into disaffected adulthood, until one day, when his world contracts into dizzying focus.
“Martial Law Babies” hurtles towards its end as Allan comes to what may be a realization too late; the world expands again to an uncertain future.

BITTERSWEET
There are no easy answers in “Martial Law Babies” even if paths cross dramatically. Arre, who himself did go to UP and is a martial law baby, tinkers adroitly with autobiographical flourish with “Martial Law Babies,” displaying the kind of thoughtful, bittersweet reminiscing championed by Alex Robinson (“Box Office Poison”) and C.B. Cebulski (“Wonderlost”).

The book is funny, sometimes naughty and always truthful; the snappy dialogue helps make it a solid read.

“Martial Law Babies” may have a target audience, but despite the dated references, the graphic novel will work for any sophisticated reader; the bittersweet, after all, is universal.
Employing his trademark whimsy and a concentrated poignancy, Arre gets all the details right, either in homage or in direct reference. Whether it’s a death-defying tricycle ride, a fateful Sting concert or ROTC in the afternoon.

BEST WORK
This is clearly Arre’s best work to date, employing a powerful range of techniques to push his story forward , using different pencil styles to evoke different moods with such nuance that the black and white art almost seems to burst into color, injecting blogs, newspaper columns, e-mails, even dream sequences into the mix. His facial work is particularly exquisite.

“We refuse to grow up,” the babies say. “We refuse to wake up.” By revealing how those childhood revenants are both comforting and haunting, Arre has done for comics what the Eraserheads did for music with “Ultraelectromagneticpop”: catch, in an addictive, accessible package, the zeitgeist of an elusive era that has now come of age and yet to come to terms with the Bozania of a world they’ve unwittingly grown up in.

With Arnold Arre’s “Martial Law Babies,” the lost tribe gains an invaluable clue to finding themselves in a world both heartbreaking and breathtaking.

Are you ready for Gerry Alanguilan's ELMER comics issue 4

The much awaited final issue of Elmer will be launched this coming Saturday, November 22 at the UP Bahay ng Alumni, many komiks fans and also Gerry Alanguilan fans and readers are excited to grab the book four and final chapter of Gerry’s graphic novel entitled “Elmer”. If you are new to this title, its not yet too late for you, You can still download the 1st issue in Gerry’s website and read it in your computer, the 1st issue is already out of print, while issue 2 and 3 are still available in our local comic book shops. ( read more below)

I just saw the cover of the final book, and it looks like a photo of Elmer’s desk at his home and the book were Jake ( son of Elmer) is reading it about their history and story on how and what happened during that Great Awakening event that happened last 1979. It’s a great story and one of the best Filipino graphic novels I ever read. But look to it, the story is all about chickens. Yes.. chickens, roosters, chicks that evolved and matches the human consciousness and awareness , means that it can talk, think, make decision, live like humans, get jobs, be a film actor, politician, cook, boxer etc. It’s a different time line and future from the brilliant and creative mind of Gerry Alanguilan. He stated that he used to have a pet chicken when he was at the age of 13, and he named it Solano, but after an incident of an animal went wild-like episode, Solano attacked Gerry and it left him to think that something might be wrong, or what if his pet chicken thinks and seem to communicate in a different way to humans.

I got a pet chicken when I was in high school, its all white and a fighting cock, I named it “Manok ni San Pedro”, then we kept him with the 3 Hens at the back of our house and it was a great experience that time to have a pet chickens who roam around the house and even lay eggs for us to eat. We haven’t got the time to breed it, and because we are in the middle of a residential area of Caloocan City, its illegal to have your own poultry in the middle of the city, but after moving out and transferred to another city, we were forced to give away the chicken to a family friend, because the compound we transferred doesn’t allow any chickens as pet in the area.

Okay move on to the story about Elmer. What if chickens do speak and think like one of us. You better grab a copy of Elmer book 4 this coming Saturday and find out what will be the fate of the chickens and humans living as one. I haven’t talked to Gerry about this final issue, and if it there will be any reprint or trade paper back format in the issue, compiling all four books, or maybe if there’s a possibility that this story will come out as a live action movie, we can’t tell now, but let’s just wait for his post from his blog.

Are you prepared and ready for Elmer 4 ? hmm I’m not sure If I can wait to get home to read, after I got my copy at the convention, I’ll proceed to Chocolate kiss café, order a hot choco and pasta, there I will read and finish Elmer for good. And I know it will be a good ending, or.. hmmmm I don’t know, its hard to predict Gerry’s brain after what we saw in his WASTED graphic novel, but let’s hope that there will be good ending for Elmer 4, if there’s a bad or tragic ending, I will accept it and find some good part of it.

This is a video message from Whilce Portacio for all pinoy komikeros, comic artist, writers, creators and to indie comic publishers. This video was aired on stage last June 2008's 7th Philippine Toys, Hobbies and Collectibles Convention, it was played after the panel discussion talk with the Filipino comic creators on stage, the panelist were Gilbert Monsanto, Taga Ilog, Taga Kanal, Jon Zamar and many more.

He gave a comment on Filipino komiks, some tips and advice on how to break into international comics scenes and some news about his new project and plans for 2009.

Next week will be the Komikon and this is my little contribution to everyone for proving an interview or video message from international comic creators, and glad that Mr. Portacio is game for a video message for us, at least he is present via online and we feel that he is really at our local convention.

The 4th Annual Filipino Komiks Convention or Komikon kicks off this month of November, and I'll be there to cover the event and also feature the good and latest independent komiks and creators here in my blog. I'm glad that we can be part of it as a media man/blogger for the coverage, and would you know that this event started when I written a concept for the 1st year of the convention, but now the event continues without me and the Artists' Den really put up a hard work in order to do it an annual event. The event for Filipino comics now grows and now the event is back!

The event concept I did was last 2005, and this note was used to conceptualize and
organize the Komikon 2005 : 1st Philippine Komiks Convention in UP Diliman.

Children's illustrators group Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan's (Ang I.N.K) 17th annual exhibition titled "Tsubibo" runs until Nov. 14 at the 4th level Shangri-la Plaza Mall, Mandaluyong City.

“Tsubibo,” explores one of the most popular attractions for children and children at heart: the carnival, in a showcase of over 30 works from Ang I.N.K. members using digital art, paper sculpture, drawing, painting and mixed media.

Ang I.N.K. treats its audience to the sights and sounds of the carnival as “Tsubibo” presents the carnival’s wild and wacky cast of characters, and delves into the thrills and chills of rides, arcade games, and other sideshow attractions.

Founded in 1991, Ang I.N.K.’s roster includes full-time freelance illustrators, graphic designers, painters, writer-illustrators, visual arts teachers and students, and artists working in publishing companies, design-related firms and advertising agencies. Apart from children's books, Ang I.N.K. members or "INKies" continue to produce workbooks, textbooks, murals, animated features, product designs and merchandising, both individually and as a group. Several INKies are recipients of local and international awards and continue to make names for themselves both here and abroad.

About Martial Law Babies graphic novel

Award-winning graphic novelist Arnold Arre takes us on a nostalgic trip through some of the Philippines' most colorful and compelling eras - from the rigidness of pre-EDSA Manila to the dizzying, commercially-intoxicated world of the new millenium.

Allan and his friends are Martial Law Babies: born during the Marcos regime, raised by TV, and shaped by 80s music. Their ambitions may be dampened by third world realities and malcontention but they also proudly belong to a generation of dreamers who fight for their voices to be heard. They are among the so-called "Bagong Lipunan" children, trying their best to live up to their name. Filipino comic artist Kriss Sison had just won the bronze award for the annual International Manga Awards.

The Second International MANGA Award had 368 entries from 46 countries and regions, which was 222 more entries and 22 more countries and regions from the First International MANGA Award.

He was one of the 12 finalists and the only Filipino among the prestigious list. His work on Ninja Girl Ko! won him the award.

The Ateneo de Manila University-School of Government in cooperation with the Asia Foundation is currently developing a comic book that will highlight the leadership and good governance stories of Kaya Natin! Founding Members, Ramon Magsaysay Awardees Mayor Jesse Robredo (Naga City) and Gov. Grace Padaca (Isabela), together with Gov. Eddie "Among Ed" Panlilio (Pampanga).

As such, we are currently looking for volunteer writers (English and Filipino) and volunteer illustrators for this project. The comic book is aimed at promoting good governance and ethical leadership in our country.

Amorsolo Illustrations at Lopez Museum

The National Artist Fernando Amorsolo, while known more for his countryside scenes, was also an illustrator for novels and komiks. In fact, he provided the illustrations for the popular comic strip, “Ganito pala sa Maynila,” which satirized the social issues during the American of occupation of the Philippines, serialized in the Bagong Lipang Kalabaw magazine from 1922 to 1924.

Some of Amorsolo’s illustrations from 1909 to 1924 are showcased in “Tell-tale: The Artist as Storyteller, Amorsolo as Co-Author” at the Lopez Museum.

As an illustrator, Amorsolo had collaborated with early twentieth-century writers like Tagalog novelists Iñigo Regalado and Severino Reyes, editor Lope K. Santos, and writer-educator Camilo O. Osias.

THE NATIONAL PRESS CLUB (NPC) and the Samahang Kartunista ng Pilipinas (SKP), launched yesterday the NPC-SKP annual editorial cartoon competition. The NPC-SKP Editorial Competition will be called The BoyTogs Awards in honor of Romeo “Boy” Togonon, a hard-hitting editorial cartoonist who died two years ago and who would have been a young 58-years-old on Monday.

The prizes are: P30,000 for the First Prize, P25, 000 for the Second Prize, and P20,000 fo0r third Prize. Five thousand pesos will each be given to five consolation prizes. Submission of entries and announcement of winners will be on October 10. Prizes will be handed during that day’s NPC

And look out the photo elements in the teaser poster, aren't that very nostalgic? ehhehe

There's a card of Go ranger (Star Ranger), Voltes V Godaiking box, Chewbacca action figure, Indian plastic toy ( tawag ko dyan tau tauhan), the logo of the 'Lipunan' something and if you were born in the 70's and being a kid during the 80's... I know you are one of those kids who watches "Uncle Bob Lucky Seven Club" on TV and fantasizes to take home all those cool toys showing on TV. Its fun to remember those years. My classmates in UST elementary school was there singing, and some of them were greeted during their birthdays, while me at home staring on TV, waiting for the latest toys to be shown and featured. I got crazy everytime they show the Dinobots of Transformers toys.. ahhh memories..

Christian Voltar Alcala, son of the late Filipino master comics illustrator Alfredo Alcala, is here having a big meeting with the legendary Stan Lee, co-creator and writer of famous comic books such as Captain America, Spider-Man Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Thor, The Incredible Hulk and the X-Men.

On May 4, 2008, my mom along with my wife and I drove from Vallejo to Los Angeles to attend a comic book convention where Stan Lee is a special guest.

It was a great experience meeting the legendary Stan Lee and my heart leaped with gladness upon having the honor of meeting this great man with such splendor and strength.

Here is Stan Lee’s reminiscence on my dad’s artworks, as I carry on the torch of my father’s legacy:

“Dear Christian,

I am highly honored that you would want me to write a few words about your father's wonderful artwork-- and about yours.

Rarely does a son manage to carry on a glorious tradition as splendidly as you have carried on your father's.

I remember Alfredo's illustrations well. They were almost poetic in their beauty. He was indeed a master illustrator who put so much of himself and his imagination in every drawing. We at Marvel are proud to have worked with such a gifted artist and such a true gentleman.

I wish you every success as you so capably follow in his fabled footsteps.

Although now based in Manila and working for Tagalog/English comics, Kapampangan elements have not failed to disappear from Pedriña's consciousness, as in his collection of original Pinoy superheroes titled Sanduguan (blood compact), most of the lead protagonists are Kapampangan.

“Most of what we have [in comics] are Tagalogs and Americans,” Pedriña explains. “I want diversity so I make characters from Mindanao, Kalinga, Bohol, Ilocos, Laguna, etc. but a lot of my characters are Kapampangan.”

16th Noma Concours for Picture Book Illustrations

The Asia/Pacific Cultural Centre for UNESCO (ACCU) calls for participants to the Noma Concours for Picture Book Illustrations, a biennial contest organised since 1978. This Concours is designed to discover up-and-coming, adult illustrators, graphic designers and artists in Asia (except Japan), the Pacific, Africa, Arab States, Latin America and the Caribbean, to provide an occasion at which they can present their works widely and to offer incentives for their creative activities.

The International Jury is comprised of well-known editors and illustrators of children' s books from different countries, and the jury members meet in Tokyo and select one Grand Prize winner, two Second Prize winners, ten Runner-up winners and twenty Encouragement Prize winners. The prize-winning works are exhibited the following year in Tokyo and at the Biennale of Illustrations Bratislava (BIB) in Slovakia, ensuring their exposure to a wide audience and generating opportunities for publication. All prize-winners are awarded with a medal designed by Mr. Sugita Yutaka. In addition, cash prizes are given to recipients in the Grand Prize (US$ 3,000), Second Prize (US$1,000) and Runner-up (US$300) categories. The award-winning works are presented at this website, as well as in the catalogue in book format.

The Concours is operated under the Noma International Book Development Fund, which was established in commemoration of the receipt of the first International Book Award in 1974 by the late Mr. Noma Shoichi, the then president of Kodansha publishing company and Vice-President of the Asia/Pacific Cultural Centre for UNESCO (ACCU).

In 1983, the Noma Concours began official exchanges with the BIB, an international exhibition that focuses mainly on works from Western artists, and since then the winning works from the Noma Concours have been shown in Europe. The Tokyo and Bratislava exhibitions provide an unparalleled opportunity and source of incentive for Concours prize-winners.

What to submit for an entry?

I haven't read the original comics Varga, but we can now have a chance to get to know the character created by Mars Ravelo, a character that was followed and basis for Darna, also created by Ravelo.

How not to be the next Neil Gaiman

Win his Graphic/Fiction Awards by being truly ‘Pinoy’

You can thank Arnold Arre, The Manila Times’ own resident graphic novelist and winner of the Manila Critics Circle and National Book Awards, for cluing in Neil Gaiman on the abundance of artistic talent in the Philippines and on the rich treasure trove of primordial myths and contemporary urban legends. The novelist, comic book author and movie scriptwriter famous for The Sandman, Stardust, Beowulf and American Gods, has gone so far as to establish and fund The Graphic/Fiction Awards, now on its third year with over P400,000 in cash with P100,000 to the first place winner and a publication deal with international distribution up for grabs. This is something Gaiman does only for the Philippines and nowhere else.

It all started on the author’s first visit to the country. “He [Gaiman] got a lot of gifts. Every person who met him gave him things—everything from books to Choc-nut. A lot of the stuff he couldn’t bring. One of the things he took with him was a book on Filipino mythology and one of Arnold’s works. He was very impressed with Arnold. He was particularly interested in what Arnold Arre was doing,” recalls Erwin Romulo, Rogue Magazine features editor, science fiction and comic book aficionado and chairman for the awards. Arre’s graphic novels combined compelling narratives that were truly Filipino and a visual style that was truly his own.

Gaiman wanted more of such originality and thought of establishing an award to encourage it. “Don’t worry, I’ll put up the money,” Romulo recalls Gaiman saying. He adds, “He’s still funding it.” In 2006 the first Graphic/Fiction Awards were held.

Arre was enlisted to become one of the judges for the awards, along with the most notable names in Filipino fantasy: Novelist Greg Brilliantes who pioneered Pinoy science fiction with Apollo Centennial, legendary filmmaker Peque Gallaga as well as playwright and spiritualist Tony Perez and Fully Booked’s Jaime Daez.

Tals Diaz, journalist and marketing manager of Fully Booked, explains the rationale for the awards: “Neil’s theme is Filipino unrealism. It has to have that unique sense of Filipino-ness about it. We do have a rich tradition of Filipino mythology and folklore that we hardly explore in our literature. If you look at our literature right now, a lot of it is very realistic. That’s what Neil Gaiman wanted us to veer away from with this contest.” Romulo adds, “Don’t say that he doesn’t like the stuff that he got from here—the realist novels that he read, he liked. He just wanted to explore if we had other things. As for fantasy, he thought we could go beyond juvenile literature and explore what he thinks is an integral part of our culture—science fiction, horror or speculative fiction. It really is how you weave the genre into Filipino heritage.”

This year’s movie blockbuster

It’s only natural that film now joins comic books and prose as among the awards’ categories on its third year. Cinema is the art form closest to comic books. Every film is developed on storyboards that greatly resemble comic book frames. And as the box office successes of Batman, 300 and Sin City have shown, comics are a rich source of compelling narratives suited for film. Organizers concede that they are open to adding new categories such as online interactive comic books in the future.

Today, the competition attracts a deluge of entries, from first timers to published authors. But some have been doing it all wrong.

How not to win

“One thing we can tell you not to do is mimic a Gaiman story. We get a lot of entries that are just versions of Neil’s stories with Filipino names in it,” says Diaz.

Many have made the mistake of hewing the clichés of science fiction, epic fantasy or supernatural genres. Romulo says, “The worst ones are those with a very narrow view of what science fiction or speculative fiction represents—the wizards and the dwarves, the shades and the trench coats of the Matrix guys, the twist endings and the angst-ridden urban alienation stories. Some have a lot of the style but no substance. We need to establish a serious literary award. Not just fan fiction or a geek boy thing.” He observes, “The ones that managed to win brought something really Pinoy.”

Being unfamiliar with the conventions of each genre is an asset. “The story I wrote for the first Graphic Fiction Award was my first short story. I didn’t know how to go about it. I didn’t read fantasy. I didn’t write fantasy. I explored the genre through the competition,” reveals Mikaela Atienza, runner up of the Graphic Fiction Awards for her work entitled “Atha.”

The competition is now open to all Filipino citizens, who may send their original entries in the categories of short story fiction, comics, and short film to any Fully Booked branch.

After drawing a variety of X-related titles ("Emma Frost” and “X-Men Unlimited” among them) and the all-ages “Marvel Adventures: Fantastic Four,” Pagulayan landed the penciling slot in one of Marvel’s iconic titles, “The Incredible Hulk.” He was psyched to be with the not-so-jolly green giant: “Overjoyed and overwhelmed and still in disbelief,” he describes his reaction. “It’s something my friends and I grew up reading and now I’m part of the story creation.” Then it got better. Pagulayan was on board when series writer Greg Pak took the Hulk literally out of this world with the gladiator-themed Planet Hulk story arc, garnering readers and accolades.

Segovia cut his teeth on local comic books then moved on to international assignments such as Image Comics’ “Tokyo Knights.” His big break happened when he landed one of the penciling roles in the supernatural DC Comics title “Countdown to Mystery.” He got the coveted gig after submitting his portfolio to DC’s editors and was surprised to get a call just a week later. “It’s a dream come true,” he admits. “It’s just like I won in a lottery.” Now he lands yet another top shelf assignment as he dispenses art for the series “Wolverine: Origins,” which stars Marvel’s favorite claw-equipped mutant.

I want to leave, because that I’m no longer happy in organizing it and no longer comfortable if I’m going to do another one for next year.. My big decision is final.

Joe Quesada: Chris, of course other countries have
super heroes. We've seen some of the other heroes and
teams that are active worldwide, including Alpha/Omega
Flight in Canada, the Winter Guard in Russia, MI:13 in
the UK (along with the more covert ClanDestine), and
Big Hero 6 in Japan. INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #2 introduces
the Triumph Division, the super-team of Manila, in
just a few short weeks. And S.H.I.E.L.D. is an
international organization, so they operate on a
global scale, though they're mostly funded and staffed
at the executive level by Americans.

then check out the Panel Talks this Saturday in Figaro cafe at Tagaytay City. I might be there to attend the panel talk by Jonas Diego and Gerry Alanguilan, but I'm not sure if I can make it this saturday for a video and photo coverage, we need to archive these panel talks for future use.

To cap the week-long Tagaytay Multimedia Workshops and Festival is a talk on the state of comics art and industry on May 31 at 3PM at Figaro Tagaytay. Speakers are comics artists Gerry Alanguilan and Jonas Diego, and publisher Boboy Yonzon. Open to the public.
