David Hontivero's online novel "Pelicula"
David Hontiveros had just released his new work online and the web heads are happy to know it, because it is free and more better than downloading ebooks and scanlation of comics. Its a brand new Pinoy superhero story that I'm sure everyone will love him.
About "Pelicula"
"Fame is a power many dream of possessing.
It is a power Luis Conrado is very familiar with, especially when he assumes his super-powered alter ego Habagat.
Having the power to fly with the eagles, the strength of a hundred men, and the ability to withstand pain and injury can sometimes pale in comparison to the shining, blinding power of fame.
Standing in that blazing spotlight for too long, Luis does not notice the ones standing in the shadows. The architects of his fame.
The ones who hold the true power."
to read the online novel visit http://www.davidhontiveros.com/
also you can see the art gallery featuring the character Habagat, created by our Filipino comics creator and artists

Arnold Arre's new comics project "Martial Law Babies"
a sample panel from Martial Law Babies
I just saw his comic proofs last sunday at the Neil Gaiman event, and Arnold showed the proof samples to Leinil Yu, when I was about to approached them, Leinil told me, "Hey Az, this is confidential, Arnold's new comic project", I was surprised to know about that from him, and I looked at Arnold and I was laughing and told them, "its okay! I wont blog it". Then Cynthia Arre told me and Mark Cerbo about the story and the title - Martial Law Babies!. and i just found out that I belong to that era - Martial law years and 30 yr old kids!.
Now that the news came out already frm Luis Katigbak's blog, I guess its already okay to post and publish it here.
and thanks to Mr. Babbling Point aka Budjette Tan for posting it in Alamat ML :)
but the greatness of this project ( no longer a secret hehehee ) - yes I'm going crazy and already forgotten the news about Andong Agimat the movie.
“I'm in the process of developing two stories,” Arnold tells us. The first is Martial Law Babies, “a coming-of-age story about a group of 30-somethings. We follow the lives of the characters, from their childhood memories to a present-day setting. It's a very personal story, and it came to me during one of those conversations with college friends over coffee. I also wanted to tackle some issues like where have our peers gone, what did they become? Why are we losing more and more talented people to first world countries? What role do we play in society? And aren't the younger generations getting better breaks in terms of work since they're adept in technology and from our perspective, more pampered? So I guess in a way another take on the title is that of us being trapped, we're under Martial Law so to speak. It's nearing completion, so hopefully we’ll get to see it in printed form sometime soon.” - Arnold Arre

Gilbert Monsanto's Digmaan poster art
Gilbert Monsanto made a fan comics merging all Filipino comics characters, from classic characters up to modern superheroes and villains characters. The digital comics was titled "Digmaan" means War. It is a war of superheroes and super villains stripped out from the old and new pages of comics. Its like merging different kind of worlds but all are happening only in the Philippine comics universe.
The poster artwork he did is unfinished and Monsanto still want to add 20 more characters for the superhero-villain mash up.

Are we ready for another Bomba komiks ?
I was informed 8 months ago about the another attempt of a local publisher to release a comics suited for mature readers and adults, also we know it as a bold or bomba komiks. I was surprised to know the publishing company and I expect that it will come out soon. But then after months of waiting, no sign of bomba komiks or bold comics. Or am I getting late and not aware that it is already been published already?.
So my questions is, are we ready? or will the community accept the coming of another era for erotic comics?
I just want to wish that this bomba comics won't be like a fly by night operation just like in the old days. I just read that from here about the old bomba komiks.
If anyone of you has a copy of the new bomba comics, just give us a note here

Me, Neil Gaiman and Elmer
[youtube=http://youtube.com/watch?v=aiqGwbx-euo]
Here I am having a short chat with Neil Gaiman and my mission is complete for I gave him my extra copy of Elmer issue 3 a komiks by Gerry Alanguilan. That was my plan ever since the comic was released last Komikon and Gerry gave a extra copy of it and even that I'm going to surprise Gerry for giving a copy of it, it seems that Gerry reads my mind ! hahahaha.
I was given a chance to have a one on one interview with Neil Gaiman, but I wasn't prepared that time and I just slipped 2 oppourtunities for a one on one intervie, but its nice that he remembers me as the guy who blog the event and send him email for his visit here once again. And yes.. it all began when he sent me an email, thanking me and everyone and glad that he reads my blog . Wow !
And I'm happy to know that he said that he always recommend the comics Elmer and he said it was a good book to read.
too bad that I left my issue 2 in my other home and he said that he haven't read issue 2, but then Gerry told me via email that he will send Neil Gaiman a copy of issue 2
whew! mission accomplished !

Caparas Komiks - the end ???
I read a news flash from Randy Valiente's blog and he just shared to us what is happening inside the Sterling Publishing and the Caparas Komiks. It seems that the local comics title of Carlo J. Caparas will be reformatted under a new manager or will it be discountinued?
Martin Cadlum, The business manager for the comics of Sterling Publishing, resigned from his job at Sterling and according to Randy, that there is a problem happening between the business partnership and deal of Carlo J. Caparas and Sterling Publishing. And now we ask this question - Is this something going to do with the new comics title of the young and new comic creators ? Is it manga comics ? or something from the vision of Caparas?

Melting Comics
By Diego Rosano P. Mapa
Painter and sculptor Louie Cordero got what it takes to become a legend. His works have been included in numerous exhibits in and out of the country including Malaysia, Singapore, London, and the United States since 1998. He also won the grand prize of the painting category in the eighth annual Freeman Foundation at the Vermont Studio Center in 2002; finalist of the Ateneo Art Award 2005 (Presented in memory of Fernando Zobel de Ayala); and recipient of the Thirteenth Artist Award at the Cultural Center of the Philippines in 2006.
Recently, his works has been featured by super-cool Asian- American sub-culture magazine Giant Robot (check issue no. 43). Moreover, an exhibit also under them in Los Angeles, called, Delubyo, paintings depicting zombies.
I first encountered Louie’s work thru his comic fanzine, Nardong Tae, a super hero basically made of shit, his powers are shit, and that five-part comic book is “the shit!” He is also known for his cover artwork for jazz-punks, Radio Active Sago Project’s latest album, T@ngina mo nagugutom ang Pilipinas… fashionista ka pa rin (Terno Recordings).
Louie’s full-colored art is like looking at detailed neon Pinoy komiks with a lot of torn guts and intestines and all characters are like dripping or melting; a true modern psychedelic experience indeed. Let’s talk to the artist:

Neil Gaiman in Manila 2007 update 3
OK everyone.. this will be or might be my last update for the event, I just got an info from Fullybooked about the event this sunday, and lets just hope that the typhoon wont give more problems to Neil Gaiman's arrival here in Manila and to the event.
for a fast news!
read this cool article in Inquirer.net
Marvelous maiden voyage
By Ruel S. De Vera
Inquirer
Last updated 06:57pm (Mla time) 11/20/2007MANILA, Philippines―There is a fine tradition of realistic fiction in Filipino literature,” Neil Gaiman explains. “We wanted to encourage unrealistic fiction.” Those words, appearing in “The Sandman” author’s Foreword, exemplify the dark heart, and considerable soul of “Expeditions: The Philippine Graphic/Fiction Awards Vol. 1―Comics” (Fully Booked, 2007, 110 pages) and “Expeditions: The Philippine Graphic Fiction Awards Vol. 1―Prose” (Fully Booked, 2007, 190 pages). And any reader will recall that Gaiman had no idea what awaited him in the Philippines: “What I knew of the Philippines could have been written on the wing of a small butterfly.”
Boasting a terrific cover by “New Avengers” artist Leinil Francis Yu and helped by a healthy heaping of horror, these books shine with potent talents.

Animahenasyon 2007 opens tonight
for Schedules and Programming
visit http://animationcouncil.org/
The Animation Council of the Philippines just finished making the shortlist of entries of their annual competition for original content animated shorts and the screening of entries will begin this Thursday in Robinson's Galeria Cinema. I just got a chat with Grace Dimaranan of Top Peg animation studio and President of the Animation Council, she just shared to us that there were more than 150 entries for the contest and 80% of it made it to the finals and having their own category such as music videos, shorts, clay, stop motion, 3D, 2D and etc.
The competition is big and all of them are good, in a professional level, these animators who joined the contest are independent, amateurs, small studio and student animators. Grace also mentioned that all studio and members of the council will have an exhibition called "Dugtungan". Each studio will make an animated story and leads them without a script or storyboard, the main reference that they will use is a certain shape illustration from were they can start and also end. And later on they will connect all those animated pieces into one story. This will show the different style and approach of each studio on putting together a story without coordinating with each other.
This activity is one of the major project of the council for the original content, and also they are on provincial school tour in promoting animation and getting talents as well.

Itsura Manga features Chester Ocampo
"My conceptualization process is flexible depending on what I want to achieve out of an artwork. If it's a no-brainer artwork, I usually just have one flimsy idea to base it on and go from there. These no-brainer artworks are just for exercise and are never meant to be taken seriously. If it's a more concept-oriented artwork, the process is usually more complex. As much as possible, I try to visualize all the elements in the image that are necessary to communicate the concept/message. Only when I'm confident about the picture in my brain do I proceed with actually working on it. This process is also flexible to accommodate last-minute ideas that strengthen the concept or the impact of the image as a whole." - chester ocampo

Columbus, Ohio--Mid-Ohio is here again!! And a special Iron Man poster by comics creator Michael Golden blasts onto the scenes to punctuate the occasion in a rather emphatic way!
Marking Golden's first appearance at this stalwart convention, the poster features Iron Man springing forth from a lightening storm with all the energy and excitement we expect from a Golden piece. Part of the shows exclusive VIP package, arranged by show promoter Roger Price, it seems perfect timing with all the buzz of Marvel's new Iron Man movie in the works, as well!
Renowned for his work on "The 'Nam," "Micronauts," "G.I. Joe," "Dr. Strange, “Batman,” “Nightwing,” “Exiles,” "Spartan X," as well as “Manga Bucky O’Hare," Golden will be on hand throughout the convention to sign each and every copy of the VIP poster put before him.
In addition, Golden will also be at Mid-Ohio signing copies of the new, much-anticipated art book, "Excess: The Art of Michael Golden," from Vanguard Productions. The 128 page tome features an introduction by industry trendsetter, McFarlane, who cites Golden as one of his influences. Following this up are quotes from the likes of Jim Lee, Gene Ha and Art Adams, “Excess” also features text by writer Renee Witterstaetter with researcher Patricia Snodgrass, comprising a comprehensive look at the artist and his work.
Mid-Ohio con takes place November 24th-25th, and is located at the Columbus Convention Center. For more information on the show, programing, and the VIP poster by artist Michael Golden go to: www.midohiocon.com

Jon Reed Wins Comic Book Idol 3 at Comic Book Resources!
Jon Reed wins Comic Book Idol 3!
Wins by less than 1%… Reed goes from an accounting assistant to comic book fame by winning the popular comic book art contest.
LOS ANGELES - After thousands of votes have been cast, an accounting assistant from Alexandria, Va., is the new Comic Book Idol. And he may need a new computer mouse after wearing his out.
“I just kept hitting ‘refresh,’ ‘refresh,’ ‘refresh,’” says Jon Reed, the Comic Book Idol 3 winner. He was eagerly watching as the votes were coming in, and with such a narrow margin of victory – an even 600 votes for Reed, while the runner-up, Charles Paul Wilson III, finished with an oh-so-close 581 votes – one can understand the nervousness he must have experienced. “It was stressful,” sighs Reed.
By winning CBI 3, the comic artist talent search contest hosted by www.comicbookresources.com, Reed gets an all-expense paid trip to the 2008 New York City Comicon, where Comic Book Idol host and comic book writer J Torres will help him network and meet industry leaders. Reed also gets assignments from IDW Publishing, Oni Press and Image Comics for winning the contest.
“I think that even previous contestants will agree that this was the most diverse and polished group of ten we’ve seen to date,” Torres said. “That made it for a tougher contest for those involved, and a better show for us fans to watch.”
Reed outlasted an incredible talent pool for CBI 3 that featured a global field, with contestants from England, Brazil and Canada. It was also a diverse field, with not only the accounting professional, who eventually won, but also a waiter and a security guard up against a batch of freelance artists. And the fans flocked to the competition – comicbookresources.com experienced a 500% increase in new traffic to its forum during the Comic Book Idol contest.

Comic artists in Eat Bulaga's On da Spot game
Its funny to see our local comic artists participate in a variety show game, I just saw this inside the bus with TV while going to Manila yesterday. That explains that why I am familiar with the final contestant for the jackpot game. The jackpot question was " who wrote the story of the monkey and the tortoise", then after winning the jackpot and getting a big prize, they showed off their comic arts and drawing on TV.
showing their artworks on TV, forgive my camera bluryness, i just took this shot inside a moving bus.
that's Dan Borgones, artist of Glass House Graphics. I was surprised that he is serious in joining the game, lucky guy won
a prize hhehe, thanks to Michelle Calanog for sharing this MMS photo.
