ROBO MONKEY PIXEL FIGHTERS was born out of a love for the printed word and sequential art.

Established in the last quarter of 2007, RMPF’s first foray into the world of business was producing the comic book version of Joe D’ Mango popular radio advice program “Love Notes” and ABS-CBN’s popular TV show “Maalaala mo Kaya” for Sterling, a major publisher and distributor of comic books in the Philippines.

Currently, the studio is set to launch its own comic magazine named “Pocket Comics” in January of 2008, entering the growing local comic book market.

Captain Barbell meets Darna TV series news update

In addition to the news, i found out some additional comments regarding the “Captain Barbell Meets Darna” series.
As far as we’re concerned, we have no information on the premise of the team-up series.

I am mytified by an entry I found on “Captain Barbell meets Darna” on wikipedia. Apparently, someone (an insider perhaps? Or just an overzealous fan?) created a wikipedia entry claiming that Villains from both the solo Darna & Capt.Barbell series are going to be part of the cast.

One rumor says (and I repeat- RUMOR) that actress Jean Garcia is to play the role of BRAGUDA, the Anomalkan Queen of the doomed Planet Marte. This Braguda (the source claims) is a younger version of the role due to the blood of virgins she has apparently consumed. (Creepy!!) A character supposedly from Capt. barbell called “Levi”, it claims, is to be played this time by Ariel Rivera instead of Patrick Garcia.

Then the article says that a new character called “ATOMIKA”( a shapeshifter) will be introduced in the series and that this is a replacement for the “Darna” character of MOLECULA.

Whether this “Atomika” chracter is the same character introduced in Mango Comics’ ‘Lastikman’ one-shot graphic novel by Gerry Alanguilan and Arnold Arre remains to be seen.

I will update you guys on any additional information that I find out. Thanks for listening.

New Filipino comics TV series in GMA 7 for 2008

thanks to Raffy for informing us this great news!, Now I'm excited to see a cross over series of Darna and Captain Barbell.
I'm still thinking who will be the actors for Darna and Capt. Barbell. Also check out Robin Padilla as the Joaquin Buradado, the prison guy who turns his tattoo into living animals. its a big wow for 2008! another Pinoy comic classic on TV. Also Gilda Olvidado's Babangon ako at Dudurugin kita turns now into a TV series along with other Mars Ravelo's superhero comic Darna and Capt. Barbell. and lastly Carlo J. Caparas' Joaquin Burdado.

In the future, I hope they can turn some of the Ramon Revilla's classic movies into TV Series, thats one of my wishlist and yes I'll be happy to watch those and collect it. or for a crazy idea, how about Gilbert Monsanto's Digmaan ?

natodas na ko! Topak Comics sold out ?!!

Time to write an original content here in Komiks News Now. A day before Christmas, thats December 24. I went for a last minute shopping for my love ones here in Cavite and after buying all stuff for them I decided to visit the bookstore and magazine stands in the mall. I just saw some new comics and magazine published by our local publishers and also new adult content magazine who just surfaced without my knowledge.

Once I was inside the store I was looking for this new adult magazine, (not that porn, but its a FHM-ish style magazine) then when I was about to ask the bookstore clerk, a young kid with her mom went inside and inquired something. The kid inquired if they have a copy of Topak Comics. and that's issue 2.  My mind became active and thought of buying the same comics, because I already forgot to grab a copy of it last month after it was released and me featuring it here.

The mom of the kid suddenly burst into anger and told the kid what the hell is Topak comics? is it a comics for idiot people?
then the clerk pulled out a Topak Comics issue 2 out from the cabinet and the mom saw it, and said "ahhh its a comics. you buy these stuff and you make a lot of mess in your room and you will just misplaced it in your room" then the kid said, "im reading this comics! I want it!" then the mom paid for the comics after knowing it was only priced at lower than P100.

then it was my turn to buy at the same hype as the kid I want a Topak comics too.  then the clerk look around and checked the shelf if they still have a copy,then my knees began to shake and it was like Im buying the 1st issue of JLA 10 years ago, it was a big fear coming in and also excitement. Then the clerk looked at me and said that they no longer have copies of Topak comics issue 2. It was like a big punch in my face when I hear that, it was a big punishment for me in not buying the comics on time. then I looked at the kid, smile at him and tried to use the Jedi mind control, trying my luck to buy the comics from him.

but the kid looked at me with a wide grin, just like the Topak guy on the cover of the comics and said, " heeehehe I got it first!"

to my disappointment, I left the bookstore and headed to eat some ice cream.

I was about to take a photo of that last issue, but decided not do it, the mom might scared at me and yelled
that a big guy like me wants to steal her son's comic book.

there ya go guys! its christmas and it is a time of sharing, giving and letting it go ahahahaha.

it is pretty clear that the Topak comics is sold out here in my place in Cavite.

Sputnik Comics Shop in Manila Bulletin

There’s a new shop in town—that is, if your town happens to be Cubao—and it looks like no other shop you’ve ever seen before, except perhaps in some strange dream that you had after staying up all night rereading Grant Morrison’s run on Doom Patrol.

Outside, it looks like it’s melting; inside, it looks like geek heaven, with its bright white interiors and its shelves stocked with wonderful comics and toys. It’s called Sputnik, and it just opened at the Cubao Expo. In the words of one of the owners, Ramon de Veyra, “We sell comics, graphic novels, action figures, designer toys, and other cool stuff: some posters, some shirts, some novels, some statues.” (The other owner is Lyle Sacris, acclaimed and anti-ordinary filmmaker.) We talked to Ramon about his new enterprise.

LUIS: What makes Sputnik different from other comics shops?

RAMON: We do our best to keep a very diverse selection of material. As readers, between myself and Lyle, we cover a pretty broad spectrum of comics material: superheroes, Vertigo titles, indy/alternative, European, manga and art/experimental stuff. The shop hopefully reflects those interests. Before, we had to go to different places to get different types of comics we like; now we try to be a one-stop shop for ourselves and others with varied tastes. But if you just like superheroes, or just like manga, or just like indie stuff, we’ve got that too! As much as we can, we like to be in the store, and can talk about various titles with customers and fellow fans, recommend stuff and be turned on to work we’re unfamiliar with as well. Also, we have a giant dripping/ melting/ oozing facade by the amazing Leeroy New.

Who are the people behind Sputnik? How did the idea for the shop come about? And why that name?

Lyle and I are pretty much it. The idea came about almost by accident; we were both at our regular haunt, [a comics shop called] Druid’s Keep in Magallanes, and Lyle was bemoaning the fact that there were no excellent comic shops in the Northern part of Metro Manila. Felix, the owner, said he wished he had a store in the North. Immediately, Lyle burst “We’ll do it!” At first I just thought he was kidding, but over time we started considering it seriously.

As for the name: believe me, we went through a long list before arriving at Sputnik. In comics, there isn’t really a dominating franchise around the world; it’s mostly independently-owned small operations like ours. So every store has to come up with its own unique name. And by this time, it seems, every single comics-related name, puns included, is taken.

So we decided to try for something unique, catchy and memorable; we chose what we thought was a pretty obscure comics-related nonsense word but even THAT was taken! Then we tried non-comics-related words, and from that list Sputnik slowly, inexorably rose to the top of the heap. It was unique, catchy, and memorable; didn’t refer to anything right now since the Russian space program ended a few decades ago, and personally I’ve always liked how it sounded. I also liked that it meant “traveling companion” or “fellow traveler” and felt it was appropriate considering Lyle and I are both really big comics fanboys at heart. But if you caught us in another mood the store might’ve been called anything from Aleph to Fermata.

THE 10TH ASIAN CARTOON EXHIBIT 2008 in SM Mall of Asia

The Japan Foundation, Manila and the SM Super Malls in cooperation with the Embassy of Japan present the "10th Asian Cartoon Exhibition: Asian Environmental Issues" from January 16-31 (SM-Mall of Asia, Pasay), February 1-6 (The Podium, Ortigas) and February 16-29 (The Block, North Edsa).

The exhibition officially reels off with an invitational opening on January 16 (Wednesday) at the SM Mall of Asia at 7:00 pm. The traveling exhibit will showcase 77 works produced by 10 leading cartoonists from Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines. The exhibit seeks to shed light on the burdens placed on the environment which have serious consequences not only for Asian nations but also for everybody all over the world. Representing the Philippines is Elizabeth T. Chionglo, cartoonist for the English-language daily Philippine Daily Inquirer. Some of her works include Bobita and Loveknots; the latter won the Catholic Mass Media Awards in 2005. The featured Japanese cartoonist is Yokota Yoshiaki, a multi-awarded cartoonist who won Gold Prize at both the 17 th and 25 th Yomiuri International Cartoon Contests held in 1995 and 2003 respectively.

The other cartoonists are Em Sothya, cartoonist of the Cambodian-language Rasmei Kampuchea Daily; Chen Li Qing (a.k.a. Li Qing), senior staff writer at Jinan Daily, an influential Chinese-language daily of Shandong Province; Mohd Irfaan Khan, producer for the weekly talk show on children’s cartoons itni Si Baat on Sahara TV; Jitet Koestana, a freelance Indonesian cartoonist and illustrator; Kong Bo Hyuk, a freelance Korean cartoonist and illustrator who won the Lotus Best Cartoon Award of the National Buddhist Cartoon Contest in 2004; Tran Minh Dung (a.k.a. Nhop), cartoonist of the Vietnamese-language humor magazine for youths Tuoi Tre Cuoi; Thi-wa-wat Pattaragulwanit, editorial cartoonist of the Thai-language daily business paper Krunpthep Thurakip and English-language daily Bangkok Post. Other participants include John Pek Teck Leong (a.k.a. Zuan), a freelance Malaysian illustrator.

The Japan Foundation has been holding The Asian Cartoon Exhibition (of one-cut and multi-cut cartoons) every year since 1995 for the purpose of capturing Asian society, culture and customs of daily life through the medium.

I saw this contest online and I NEVER enter these things because art is so subjective, but what
intrigued me most were the limitations of using 6 stock images (supplied by the hosts). It
challenged a whole different skill set, in that I had to make very "cold" photos into something
else... no painting or analog art. Just pure Photoshop.

I didn't want to post the actual image online, in case there was some copyright rule I wasn't
aware of.

REVIEW: Captain Barangay Captain

I recently bought a two-disc DVD/CD-ROM of indie animated comic book titled Captain. Barangay Capt. by Kiko Machine front man JP Cuison and Kiko Machine Komix artist Manix Abrera at the recent Komikon 2007. I was sold not because of the comic book but my friend Azrael went nuts looking for one. He almost spent his money worth on all indie comics, and my curiosity was quite missing the "feel" of this event. So finally I have watched the full length (spanning two DVD/CD-ROM) discs of the series.

So Captain Barangay Capt. what's it all about? Basically the animated comic was inspired from the characters from Marvel Comics. Like Captain Barangay Capt. was inspired from Captain America and his Kagawads from the original Mighty Avengers like Might T from Thor, Bakal Boy from Iron Man, and Hogan was inspired from... Ahem The Hulk and Pro Wrestler Hulk Hogan.

Surprisingly Manix Abrera's pencils was inspired from Jack "King" Kirby who co-created with Stan Lee for Captain America and other well-known Marvel characters. The art was classic inspiration that got me on my heels seeing this animated comic and with a Filipino twist.

DISC ONE

The first disc contains three episodes. The origin of Captain Barangay Capt., which reminds me of Captain Barbell's origin. But this time around he was formerly known as Captain Dumbbell. The second and third episode is an Entrapment Operation against Doktor Domingo a.k.a Doktor Dom which features the first appearance of the Kagawads local version of the original Might Avengers that featured The Hulk, Mighty Thor, and Iron Man in there heyday.

The animated comic has funny and it was narrated by JP Cusion in tagalog, who sounded like Rey Langit a local radio & TV personality.


DISC TWO

On the second disc it contains the adventures of Captain Barangay Capt. taking on the local version of The Red Skull. The next episode is the adventures of Bakal Boy taking on Magnus Lasingero a.k.a the local version of Magneto. Plus! The origin of Mighty T as the last episode to see on the Two-Disc animated comic.

The animated comic was first released in 2006, and they made a follow-up with the second disc. he humor made me sold and liked these comic book characters. Would like to see them in print or a Third Disc would be greatly expected to see.

Overall it was a fun strip and if your not familiar where they got the inspiration to this its in the credits. Seriously looking forward to there forth coming works. Definitely a must buy to support indie comics locally.

Sputnik Comics Shop opens in Cubao X

We went to the opening of a new comic store in the middle of the busy area of Cubao last month, and we are happy and yes, super happy to know that it is really a shop for comics! Video below is an interview and feature of the Sputnik Comics Shop, we didn't know why it is named after that satellite, but for us it is more faster than a speeding rocketship.

Inquirer: ‘Komiks’ boosts drive to protect Banahaw

SARIAYA, Quezon – It took several years before Carmen Cabling was able to publish the first edition of Banahaw (Komiks-Pahayagan Para sa Kalikasan) last year but the challenge of producing another one and being able to distribute copies to communities around Mt. Banahaw before this year is over does not faze her.

“Komiks has its own intrinsic charm of tapping the pulse of the people,” said Cabling, 40, a freelance writer for the movies and television.

Sometime in 1999, when the Foundation for the Philippine Environment (FPE) commissioned Cabling to conduct a postproject evaluation for the nongovernment Luntiang Alyansa para sa Bundok Banahaw (LABB), she learned that the main problem of advocacy work on Banahaw protection was the lack of information materials.

“The newsletters about Banahaw were not being read,” she said.
As early as 2000, Cabling wanted to produce a komiks material but the cost and effort required to put one out held her back.

It was not until 2004, however, after conducting another evaluation, when the FPE gave her the go-signal to come out with a komiks about the mountain.

Pasko Ng Komiks

As part of the U.P. College of Arts and Letters “Linggo ng KAL” event on December 6-14, the U.P . Likhaan: Institute of Creative Writing (UP-ICW) and Read or Die sponsor Pasko ng Komiks or PASKOM symposium on December 11 (Tues), 9am at the Pulungang Claro M. Recto, College of Arts and Letters, UP Diliman, Quezon City.

PASKOM will discuss the relevance of comics arts in contemporary Filipino life. Four related topics, which foreground new perpectives on a growing popular arts tradition, will be discussed, namely “Komiks in Philippine Culture and History,” “The Study and Collection of Komiks,” “Women in Komiks,” and “Creating Komiks.”

In the morning , Pablo Gomez, Patrick Flores, Gerry Alanguilan, Glady Gimena, Dennis Villegas, and Orvy Jundis will talk on the two first topics. Then in the afternoon, the women artists—Sherry Baet, Ofelia Concepcion, Vivian Limpin, Elizabeth Chionglo, Joannah Tinio-Catinglo, and Gilda Olvidado—will talk about how the feminine and comics arts intertwine toward a liberative cause.

Still later in the day, comics creators Carlo Vergara, Andrew Drilon, Andrew Villar, Carlo Pagulayan, Randy Valiente, Jonas Diego, Melvin Catinglo, Rey Tiempo, KC Cordero and Victor Balanon will unravel the energy and inspiration behind their works.

The day long discussion will be synthesized and commented upon by Bobby Yonzon (Mango Comics), Emil Flores, Joey Baquiran, and Lawrence Mijares.
Prior to the symposium, a comics exhibit, featuring the actual works of contemporary and past comics artists will be on show beginning December 8. It will be set at the Galleries 1 & 2 of Bulwagang Rizal, College of Arts and Letters, UP Diliman.

PASKOM is made possible through the support of National Books Development Board, Powerbooks, Mango Comics, WikiPilipinas, New Worlds Alliance, Read or Die, Komikera, and the U.P. College of Arts and Letters. We would also like to thank Komiks.ph and Guhit Pinoy for their support.

Pinoy elements in Iron Man Annual 1

Comic Book Geek reported in his site about the appearances of some pinoy elements in some pages of the Iron Man Annual 1 comics, this is the best part when Filipino comic artists insert something in a comic page that promotes the Philippines. As a reader, I am happy that this one appeared. Its like a trend of inserting pinoy DNA into the comics

// It will be more better if they can write an article on what happened to the Caparas Komiks. Been waiting for the latest issue 6 and it seems that  they are 2 weeks delayed. I asked a news stand seller on the other day and he told me that the latest issue hasn't delivered yet. Will there be Caparas Komiks ? as Im writing this hope they can have PR for that promoting the latest issue and also the comics. It is so weird in here that the news stand comics still uses the old tradition of marketing it. But as they say, it is still effective. But for me it is not.

Don't let Carlo J. Caparas's appearance fool you.

Trademark dark sunglasses, a baseball cap to pacify his long wavy black hair, and a denim jacket to go with a pair of jeans—Caparas seems like your typical working-class neighbor struggling to make ends meet.

But scratch the surface and you'll find one gem of a pioneer who has done so much in promoting homegrown literature through graphic art, which in the past was considered unconventional, even snubbed as bakya, in the face of traditional media.

CULTIVATING A DREAM. Carlo J. Caparas's life is an inspiring tale of rags-to-riches worth retelling many times over.

Burdened by poverty, with a jobless father to boot, Carlo had no choice but forgo his high school education to help augment his mother's meager earnings as a laundry woman. He took on a string of odd jobs—water carrier, boatman, construction laborer, factory hand—and dutifully did his share in supporting not just his parents but his eight siblings as well.

Dropping out of school, however, didn't hinder Carlos from nourishing his passion for reading. A voracious bookworm, Carlo intentionally did not surrender his library ID so he could have continuous access to the wealth of reading materials stationed at the shelves. But this clever tactic came to an abrupt end when he was spotted by the school principal inside the library.

Carlo's fondness for reading indeed may have prompted him to apply as a security guard in the Carmelo and Bauerman Publishing in Makati. Soon, all the books, magazines, and other literary materials being printed by the company were at his disposal. During his graveyard shift from 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. daily, Carlo kept himself awake by reading even the books that had not yet reached the bookstores.

His security guard days, recalls Carlo significantly, were his "1,000 nights of reading."

During a company strike, the then-19-year-old security guard was hit by a stray bullet in the heel, forcing him to rest and recuperate.

The downtime provided the perfect opportunity for the injured security guard to practice all those long hours of submerging himself in the world of books. Almost instantly, Carlo discovered his knack for storytelling. "Citadel"—the first Carlo J. Caparas komiks story was serialized in Superstar.
