In addition to the news, i found out some additional comments regarding the “Captain Barbell Meets Darna” series.
As far as we’re concerned, we have no information on the premise of the team-up series.
I am mytified by an entry I found on “Captain Barbell meets Darna” on wikipedia. Apparently, someone (an insider perhaps? Or just an overzealous fan?) created a wikipedia entry claiming that Villains from both the solo Darna & Capt.Barbell series are going to be part of the cast.
One rumor says (and I repeat- RUMOR) that actress Jean Garcia is to play the role of BRAGUDA, the Anomalkan Queen of the doomed Planet Marte. This Braguda (the source claims) is a younger version of the role due to the blood of virgins she has apparently consumed. (Creepy!!) A character supposedly from Capt. barbell called “Levi”, it claims, is to be played this time by Ariel Rivera instead of Patrick Garcia.
Then the article says that a new character called “ATOMIKA”( a shapeshifter) will be introduced in the series and that this is a replacement for the “Darna” character of MOLECULA.
Whether this “Atomika” chracter is the same character introduced in Mango Comics’ ‘Lastikman’ one-shot graphic novel by Gerry Alanguilan and Arnold Arre remains to be seen.
I will update you guys on any additional information that I find out. Thanks for listening.

ReplyDeleteCONTINUITY SPECULATIONS.
Many fans have been asking if "Captain Barbell Meets Darna" will simply continue from where their solo adventures left off.
When last we saw Darna, she had borrowed Dyesebel's Enchanted shell and combined its power with her own to help even the odds against braguda.
At the end of the final storyarc, Narda decided to "retire" from the role of Darna by throwing the magic white stone into a stream while on a picnic with Efren and Valentina's mutant baby.
But the world would not be without a superhuman champion as Captain Barbell is shown in a cameo as taking over Darna's chores as a hero.
From recent write-ups, I get the impression that GMA may not do a reboot but in fact simply use the same continuities already established previously. If so, this would explain the rumors surrounding the return of characters like Braguda and "Levi".
But how would this be done since Narda "retired" her role as DARNA??? Here' is my speculation: My best guess is- The character of "Efren" (previously played by Dennis Trillo) might be killed off. If this happens, Narda would have a reason to regret ever having given up the white stone and would finally come to a realization that for better or worse- her destiny IS to be DARNA. This would pave the way for the stone to once again find Narda and as she comes to possess its power once more may find a kindred spirit in the other champion- Captain Barbell.
Since there are only 2 of them in the world, Darna may find great comfort in that and perhaps pave the way to a relationship later on with Teng (who would be the only other person in the world who would truly understand what a blessing and a burden being a hero is.)
This would perhaps lead to all sorts of interesting new variables and provide great drama as well as action. Im looking forward to it.
I have 2 recommendations for GMA regarding this-
1) This time, just let Narda swallow the stone just ONE MORE TIME WITHOUT having to take the stone out everytime she returns to her mortal form as Narda. Isang beses na lang sana yung lunok, then let the stone simply be absorbed within her and have just yell "DARNA!" to transform. Di na kailangan ilabas ang bato. This is, after all- the ORIGINAL version of Darna's transformation.
2) With Captain Barbell, PLS. USE MARS RAVELO'S CONCEPTS MORE. Pls. do NOT steal plots from "Smallville".
I like the yellow and red suit, that's fine. But Tito Mars Ravelo made it a point to show that he is NOT Superman.
3) Most Importantly- Focus on better stories as priorities.
No more "Rich People are Evil Vs. Poor People" melodrama.
There are more important things for them to be concerned about.

***Thanks for the vote of confidence. It's just that its more special when they ACTUALLY use Mars Ravelo's concepts instead of just them using his name and passing off bad ideas as Ravelo's. It is not fair to Mars Ravelo or these characters.
Take the recent "Captain Barbell reinvention". The only thing good that came from that is the new costume design of Red and Yellow. (At least he does not look like Superman anymore)
But all this effort is wasted because rather than exand on Ravelo's mythology on Captain Barbell, GMA used the "Smallville" mythology.
Then they passedoff the DESIGN of the New Captain Barbell Costume as a "Miles Teves" design. That is wrong. The Hollywood-based Miles Teves JUST BUILT the costume.
IT WAS ACTUALLY DESIGNED BY FILIPINO ARTIST:RENO MANIQUIS. He was commissioned by Zaldy & Gina Ravelo of Mars Ravelo Marvelous Characters, Inc. to design the new look to make it Cap's official costume.
I am excited. ..and hopeful that the tv writers can learn from their mistakes in the past and come up with a good Action/Drama truly worthy of Darna & Captain Barbell. Peace!
With the resurrection of Captain Barbell and Darna on primetime tv, I wonder if there will also be a special appearance of the Super Twins, since the endings of all these past programs were cliffhangers.
ReplyDeleteHow about a 1-show telemovie of Encantadia? Whatever happened to the rule of new queen of Lireo (played by Precious Lara Quigaman), was there really lasting peace in Encantadia? And how about the guardian/chronicler (played by Marky Cielo) of Encantadia on a dragon? What would have happened to him? They could also add to the story of the new Encantadia whatever happened to the new Mulawin race, were Aguiluz and Alwina able to multiply much more?

You guys don't get it. (Kasama na ako doon). They will NEVER listen to us because these shows are NOT MEANT for us. They are not making these shows for us Internet Freaks. They're doing it for the Pinoy Masa who they will forever think of as stupid, unsophisticated, clueless, who will swallow anything that they do as long as there's comedy and a bit with a dog (If those people even get that reference I'll eat my cat).
ReplyDeleteNow with regards to ATOMIKA, I referred to the WIKI article and I saw no mention of it. But if they do intend on coming up with an Atomika character who is a shapeshifter without consulting Arnold, me and Mango, the shit will hit the fan.

I wouldn't want to advertise a search for artists, promising they'd work on comics but end up doing something else. Please confirm since I'm getting conflicting reports from people who are both affiliated with the Ravelo Properties.

hello, i vote chynna ortaleza to be the next DARNA 2008... she's so cute to be modern narda knows how to act in drama, action,sweet loving, and with sense of humor.... i suggest that her role as a new DARNA will be of energy, dedication ,interest, and pure enjoyment just like her talent in dancing in s.o.p., she really enjoys it and she's so sexy and beautiful abs and cute smile...

Here is what Mr. Zaldy Ravelo clarified:
"Mr. Alanguilan is correct we will be commissioning our artist to do designs for our merchandising materials first then subsequently to do comicbooks based on the character designs they will be making. And this is on a per project basis."

***Excellent. It's perfectly okay not to divulge anything at this point. I am perfectly happy just hearing that it is GOOD NEWS !! I'm glad you are still working with Zaldy and the others. Kami naman ni Eric (with the Darna Website & Mars Ravelo Superheroes Website)- we are more focused naman on keeping all of DARNA FANDOM informed with officially approved news of all kinds as well as publicizing and "keeping the torch burning".
I will be attending next weeks WONDER CON in San Francisco and let you guys know about more comics related stuff !!
In addition to being a major fan of Mars Ravelo Characters, I am also a big DC COMICS FAN (and various other non dc comics) Hopefully I can share some pictures from the event with you all.
I am trying to come to terms with the fact that they are merging Captain Barbell and Darna together. I do not know whether it is good or bad. What do they plan to do about it? How will it work? A team up like Batman and Robin?
