SARIAYA, Quezon – It took several years before Carmen Cabling was able to publish the first edition of Banahaw (Komiks-Pahayagan Para sa Kalikasan) last year but the challenge of producing another one and being able to distribute copies to communities around Mt. Banahaw before this year is over does not faze her.
“Komiks has its own intrinsic charm of tapping the pulse of the people,” said Cabling, 40, a freelance writer for the movies and television.
Sometime in 1999, when the Foundation for the Philippine Environment (FPE) commissioned Cabling to conduct a postproject evaluation for the nongovernment Luntiang Alyansa para sa Bundok Banahaw (LABB), she learned that the main problem of advocacy work on Banahaw protection was the lack of information materials.
“The newsletters about Banahaw were not being read,” she said.
As early as 2000, Cabling wanted to produce a komiks material but the cost and effort required to put one out held her back.
It was not until 2004, however, after conducting another evaluation, when the FPE gave her the go-signal to come out with a komiks about the mountain.

This is another example of komiks in a "different level". Carmen Cabling, by the way, used to be my colleague in KMNP (Kapisanan ng mga Manunulat ng Nobelang Popular) being herself a writer of paperback romance novels in Tagalog/Filipino language. KMNP was formed and incorporated way back in early 1994. Initiating this project, she could now be considered part of "komiksworld Philippines".
