Finally!
after a year of no update, I successfully transferred all blog post from our first blog in wordpress.com, it seems that I am very comfortable using Blogger than Wordpress, since all my blogs are from blogger.com.

I promise that this blog will continue to deliver news and review about Philippine comics or Komiks.

I like to talk to all readers who posted all their comments, all readers who go back here and check our updates
and also to our komiks creator who never stop in creating new komiks for us.

We will be receiving membership applications for Ang I.N.K. (Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan.) Deadline is February 13, 2009. Your application should include:

1. Accomplished application form. (text or e-mail me so I could send you an electronic copy.)
2. Applicants are asked to conceptualize a distinctly contemporary Filipino aesthetic to any of the following stories: Hansel & Gretel, Three Little Pigs, or Little Red Riding Hood. The illustrator must:

a. respect the original spirit of the story
b. anticipate story text place into their page design (dummy text may be used)
c. illustrate at least one full-color spread of the story that best exhibits the aesthetic and your skill.
(recommended size & orientation: 8 1/2 x 11inches landscape)
d. illustrate one or two bond papers showing eight to ten thumbnails
depicting your interpretation of the selected story. Legible. Color is unnecessary.

The Ateneo de Manila University-School of Government in cooperation with the Asia Foundation is currently developing a comic book that will highlight the leadership and good governance stories of Kaya Natin! Founding Members, Ramon Magsaysay Awardees Mayor Jesse Robredo (Naga City) and Gov. Grace Padaca (Isabela), together with Gov. Eddie "Among Ed" Panlilio (Pampanga).

As such, we are currently looking for volunteer writers (English and Filipino) and volunteer illustrators for this project. The comic book is aimed at promoting good governance and ethical leadership in our country.

My last dance for the Philippine Toy Con

and because that I’m no longer comfortable working for the event that I’m nursing it for almost  5 years already.

its time for me to say Good bye for the Philippine Toys, Hobbies and Collectibles Convention aka Toy Con.

its been a good year handling the big event and thus dubbed as the local version of the Comicon San Diego, and its a great event that I learned more on how to become a professional in handling and managing, its a big learning ground for being proactive in everything.

I want to leave, because that I’m no longer happy in organizing it and no longer comfortable if I’m going to do another one for next year.. My big decision is final.

this 2008 will be my last Toy Con.

so for this year, lets make it big.. the greatest and the grandest convention in the Philippines ever!

after doing for AnimeXplosion 2000 : 1st Philippine Anime Convention and Komikon : 1st Philippine Komiks Convention.  its now time for me to close my book for the Toy Con : 1st Philippine Toys, Hobbies and Collectibles Convention.

My energy is gone, but maybe a new spark might come out soon.

Meeting the people of Kolektib Intelidyens

This is the final event I attended last Saturday, and lucky me to have a meet up with comic artist Ryan Orosco before going to Cubao Expo. I arrived too early for the event, and it was hot in the street of Cubao and I crawled down via taxi from my visit in Fullybooked Free comic book day.

But I decided to have a cold drinks and surf the internet in Gloria Jeans Coffee in Shopwise Araneta Center, were I waited for Ryan's return from his meeting. I texted Budjette at 3:00pm if they are already there, and the replied that everyone is already in the event, then I decided to go late and get updates and do some chores for me work were I try to resolve some website problems for Glass House Graphics.

Me and Ryan walked around the Araneta Center up to the Cubao Expo, were the event called 9 in 1 Kolektib Intelidyens, ( Collective Intelligence), its an event by the Visual Print Enterprise, a comic and book publisher for 9 artists.



Met the brilliant minds behind the comics of Trese, Zsa Zsa Zaturnnah, Kiko Machine, and many more. It was like a mini comic convention, because there are lots of comic fans went there just to meet the artists to get their book and comics signed by the artists, and also ask advice for their comic creators and works. Our local comic creators went there too as a fan of their fellow artists in the industry and it was fun to see them hanging out and while we take air outside the venue we had a great chat outside.

from my chat here are some great news from them.

I asked David Hontiveros about his superhero character novel online, and told him if he is willing to print the novel into comics, he said that he is willing for comics version of his novel, but its hard to manage and get artist nowadays and bring them in as a job for the title, as I told him about budget issues, and yes.. printing it is very expensive in this time, I asked what if there's someone did a fan-comic version of the novel without your consent, do you consider it?, then he said that its okay, but it will be great if he will be informed about it first. Sounds good noh? but thats only my make idea and just asked him maybe he can make it a comic book version. To know more of his online novel, visit http://davidhontiveros.com/

Then i got a short talk with Budjette Tan and Carlo Vergara, I just reminded them again for the Toy Con and I'm super excited to have Carlo and Budjette as one of my guest for the ToyCon and I told them about the panel discussions hour with the comics creator, I really want Carlo to join the panel, and yes it will be a big promotion and also an awareness that Zsa Zsa Zaturnnah has a sequel in comics. Jonas Diego was there too, and I told him about my Toy Con and invited him to join the panels, heard from him that he is working a new comics series with our local artists, even that he is not sure if the comics will be available at that time, he said that he will try to release and show some comic teasers and samples.


Chompy and Lyndon Gregorio

Lyndon Gregorio, Lei Chompy Muncal and Syeri Baet was there too, my fellow Artist's Den group, I talked to them about the latest news for the Komikon, and they said that the convention will be on the month of November and tentatively on the 22nd. They were planning to have a mini comic even before the convention and the venue still be in U.P. Bahay ng Alumni. and the big news from Syeri. She's getting married with her long time BF comic artist Jon Zamar, congrats in advance. For Lyndon and Beerkada news, hmm heard that he will release new Beeerkada Plush dolls. and my bet is a PSYCHO COW doll! ahhahahaa! which will be launched in Toy Con 2008.

For the first time I met Kajo Baldisimo, artist for Trese comics. We discuss some matters about his addition in the talent roster of Glass House Graphics and heard from Kajo that they are making a new issue of Trese, which I read it too in the Alamat ML that there's a teaser, which I failed to look at it at the event.

Got a great talk too with Manix Abrera, and extended my invite for the Toy Con 2008 and can't believe that he is so excited when I asked him to join with us, he said that he will be releasing a secret merchandise of Kiko Machine or maybe one of his comic works, Reisa also told me to keep it secret haahaa, congrats to Reisa too for her college graduation, now I see a marketer in the works.

met and talked to great people like Freely Abrigo and Johnny Balbona, and I'm a little bit jealous for he takes home a Zsa Zsa Zaturnnah giant poster hehehe, go Johnny! thanks for that yucky news about the hair band condom news in China.

the event is a great success. hope there will be another exhibit and also meet and greet with our local artists. arghhh.. im tired already and this will be my last post for the week. see you next weekend!

CLASSICAL COMICS SCOOP SILVER IPPY WITH THEIR FIRST BOOK

The all-British graphic novel Henry V, has been awarded a Silver Medal at the 2008 Independent Publishers Awards (the “IPPYs”) in America.

This year’s contest attracted a total of 3,175 entries and saw the Original Text Henry V, which was released in November 2007, win runner-up in the Graphic Novel/Drawn Book- Drama/Documentary category.

Classical Comics are new UK publishers who are creating engaging versions of literary classics, by converting the timeless stories into stunning, full colour graphic novels.

The Crucible Launches Malang Comic Book

I was in SM Megamall yesterday and I just a Malang comics and cartoon exhibit inside The Crucible and then I asked for a press release of the exhibit just to inform everyone about the event. And then I found out that they also published a Malang comic book, priced at P350. Which I will grab it this Monday, so excited to know about this and even that I missed the exhibit and opening in Art Center, this is a second chance for me to see and appreciate Malang's cartoon and comics creations. The Crucible Launches Malang Comic Book

Long Before he became one of the Philippines’ most acclaimed painters, Malang enjoyed a “past life” as a cartoonist. From the 1940s to the 1960s, he created cartoon characters and comic strips that were widely followed in such publications as the Chronicle, This Week magazine and Weekly Graphic.

A sampling of Malang’s prolific output as a cartoonist is now gathered in the comic book “The Forgotten Malang: A Career in Cartoons”. Published by The Cubicle Workshop, it will be launched on Jan. 23, 6pm., at The Crucible Gallery which is also opening an exhibit of the artist’s cartoons that runs until Feb 10.

The comic book and exhibit feature selections of the various cartoon series that Malang drew such as : Kosme the Cop, the adventures of a city policeman as he walk his beat; Chain-Gang Charlie, the convict who has a thousand and one uses for his ball and chain; and Malang’s Menagerie, a humorous look at life in the city and barrio.

In the comic book, there are also editorial cartoons, illustration for legal columns and spot cartoons. It also shares little-known trivia about Malang, among them, that he opened The Bughouse, the country’s first cartoon gallery, along with several artist-colleagues in 1955.

“The Forgotten Malang” comic book, with text provided by Susan A. de Guzman and Giselle P. Kasilag, is a spin-off of the exhibition of the same title held last year which they also conceptualized.

By tracing Malang’s artistic roots, the comic book re-introduces Malang to the public, particularly younger audiences, and shows how these roots helped prepare him for his eventual transition into a full-time painter.

Malang affirms that his 20-year cartooning experience honed his graphic skill, while having a daily deadline taught him to be disciplined and to be more observant of things that went on around him which he used as sources of ideas of cartoons.

Decades later, many of these pieces remain just as amusing as when they were first drawn for a different generation of readers, thus providing the lasting appeal of the visual pun and the timeless humor of the artist who made it his specialty.

Heath Ledger R.I.P.

It was a great morning wake up call for me while I watch TV and read some articles in my laptop that I saved last night, then my friend Earl texted me with a lot of disappointed saying that Heath Ledger is dead and Joker is Dead!.

I almost fell into my seat when I read that and then I immediately checked on the news in CNN if there is an update or a flash news about it, but didn't see any news about Heath. Then I quickly went down carrying my laptop and then opened my internet and there it goes. Everyone in Multiply is already talking about his death and a lot of links reporting it also.

Here''s what I think first when I heard the news. Did he finished the Dark Knight film?

But after reading some articles, the film is finished and it will be his last movie as one of the scariest villain of all comic icons - the Joker.

The Award was established in May 2007 to honor MANGA artists who have contributed to the promotion of MANGA overseas. In the First International MANGA Award competition was held last year, two Filipino artists, Elmer Damaso and Jhomar Soriano, creators of Ravenskull and Mr. Grieves respectively, ranked among the top 19 brilliant MANGA artists, having been selected among the 146 nominees from 26 countries and regions all over the world.

The Executive Committee members of the Second International MANGA Award include the Japanese Minister for Foreign Affaris and the President of the Japan Foundation among others.
