"SPAWN #185's all-new direction completely sells out!"

Press Release

30 October 2008 (Berkeley, CA) - The comic book event of the season started off with a bang as SPAWN's new direction, courtesy of Image Founders Todd McFarlane & Whilce Portacio, resulted in an immediate distribution-level sell-out!

"Obviously it’s good news to have the initial issue sell out so quickly, but now the bigger task is to continue that momentum in the issues going forward," Spawn creator Todd McFarlane said. "As a reminder, the first few issues will be a lot of setup before we kick this into high gear.  Each issue isn’t meant to be its own stand-alone book."

Christian Voltar Alcala meets Stan Lee

Written by azrael on 3:05 AM Wednesday, September 17, 2008

Christian Voltar Alcala, son of the late Filipino master comics illustrator Alfredo Alcala, is here having a big meeting with the legendary Stan Lee, co-creator and writer of famous comic books such as Captain America, Spider-Man Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Thor, The Incredible Hulk and the X-Men.

IT’S EXCALIBUR AND EXCELSIOR!
By: Christian Voltar Alcala

Shrine Auditorium, Los Angeles, CA

On May 4, 2008, my mom along with my wife and I drove from Vallejo to Los Angeles to attend a comic book convention where Stan Lee is a special guest.

It was a great experience meeting the legendary Stan Lee and my heart leaped with gladness upon having the honor of meeting this great man with such splendor and strength.

Here is Stan Lee’s reminiscence on my dad’s artworks, as I carry on the torch of my father’s legacy:
“Dear Christian,

I am highly honored that you would want me to write a few words about your father's wonderful artwork-- and about yours.

Rarely does a son manage to carry on a glorious tradition as splendidly as you have carried on your father's.

I remember Alfredo's illustrations well. They were almost poetic in their beauty. He was indeed a master illustrator who put so much of himself and his imagination in every drawing. We at Marvel are proud to have worked with such a gifted artist and such a true gentleman.

I wish you every success as you so capably follow in his fabled footsteps.

Excelsior!
Stan Lee

”I respect this noble and righteous man for his achievements, as much as I love and respected my father. He is true to his word, the qualities of a great knight in shining armor which shines with honor throughout the entire Kingdom of Camelot.

In 2006, Roy Thomas and Stan Lee had a project on Marvel and it was an honor when Roy and Stan acknowledged me their book-“Stan Lee’s Amazing Marvel Universe”.

I shall always treasure this book as I have treasured my father’s legacy.

EXCALIBUR!

How not to be the next Neil Gaiman

Win his Graphic/Fiction Awards by being truly ‘Pinoy’

By Rome Jorge, Lifestyle Editor

You can thank Arnold Arre, The Manila Times’ own resident graphic novelist and winner of the Manila Critics Circle and National Book Awards, for cluing in Neil Gaiman on the abundance of artistic talent in the Philippines and on the rich treasure trove of primordial myths and contemporary urban legends. The novelist, comic book author and movie scriptwriter famous for The Sandman, Stardust, Beowulf and American Gods, has gone so far as to establish and fund The Graphic/Fiction Awards, now on its third year with over P400,000 in cash with P100,000 to the first place winner and a publication deal with international distribution up for grabs. This is something Gaiman does only for the Philippines and nowhere else.

It all started on the author’s first visit to the country. “He [Gaiman] got a lot of gifts. Every person who met him gave him things—everything from books to Choc-nut. A lot of the stuff he couldn’t bring. One of the things he took with him was a book on Filipino mythology and one of Arnold’s works. He was very impressed with Arnold. He was particularly interested in what Arnold Arre was doing,” recalls Erwin Romulo, Rogue Magazine features editor, science fiction and comic book aficionado and chairman for the awards. Arre’s graphic novels combined compelling narratives that were truly Filipino and a visual style that was truly his own.

Gaiman wanted more of such originality and thought of establishing an award to encourage it. “Don’t worry, I’ll put up the money,” Romulo recalls Gaiman saying. He adds, “He’s still funding it.” In 2006 the first Graphic/Fiction Awards were held.

Arre was enlisted to become one of the judges for the awards, along with the most notable names in Filipino fantasy: Novelist Greg Brilliantes who pioneered Pinoy science fiction with Apollo Centennial, legendary filmmaker Peque Gallaga as well as playwright and spiritualist Tony Perez and Fully Booked’s Jaime Daez.

Tals Diaz, journalist and marketing manager of Fully Booked, explains the rationale for the awards: “Neil’s theme is Filipino unrealism. It has to have that unique sense of Filipino-ness about it. We do have a rich tradition of Filipino mythology and folklore that we hardly explore in our literature. If you look at our literature right now, a lot of it is very realistic. That’s what Neil Gaiman wanted us to veer away from with this contest.” Romulo adds, “Don’t say that he doesn’t like the stuff that he got from here—the realist novels that he read, he liked. He just wanted to explore if we had other things. As for fantasy, he thought we could go beyond juvenile literature and explore what he thinks is an integral part of our culture—science fiction, horror or speculative fiction. It really is how you weave the genre into Filipino heritage.”

This year’s movie blockbuster

It’s only natural that film now joins comic books and prose as among the awards’ categories on its third year. Cinema is the art form closest to comic books. Every film is developed on storyboards that greatly resemble comic book frames. And as the box office successes of Batman, 300 and Sin City have shown, comics are a rich source of compelling narratives suited for film. Organizers concede that they are open to adding new categories such as online interactive comic books in the future.

Today, the competition attracts a deluge of entries, from first timers to published authors. But some have been doing it all wrong.

How not to win

“One thing we can tell you not to do is mimic a Gaiman story. We get a lot of entries that are just versions of Neil’s stories with Filipino names in it,” says Diaz.

Many have made the mistake of hewing the clichés of science fiction, epic fantasy or supernatural genres. Romulo says, “The worst ones are those with a very narrow view of what science fiction or speculative fiction represents—the wizards and the dwarves, the shades and the trench coats of the Matrix guys, the twist endings and the angst-ridden urban alienation stories. Some have a lot of the style but no substance. We need to establish a serious literary award. Not just fan fiction or a geek boy thing.” He observes, “The ones that managed to win brought something really Pinoy.”

Being unfamiliar with the conventions of each genre is an asset. “The story I wrote for the first Graphic Fiction Award was my first short story. I didn’t know how to go about it. I didn’t read fantasy. I didn’t write fantasy. I explored the genre through the competition,” reveals Mikaela Atienza, runner up of the Graphic Fiction Awards for her work entitled “Atha.”

The competition is now open to all Filipino citizens, who may send their original entries in the categories of short story fiction, comics, and short film to any Fully Booked branch.

Deadline of submission is September 30, 2008. For details, visit www.fullybookedonline.com.

Spawn gets a massive makeover in October when a brand new creative team dons the suit come issue #185—a creative team consisting of writer Brian Holguin, Image founder Whilce Portacio and Spawn creator himself, Todd McFarlane.

"We've just been talking with everybody involved about what we can do to see if we can inspire the readers," McFarlane said. "One of them was to just take the book in a different direction in terms of the storyline, and then the other one was maybe take it in a bit of a different direction artistically, too."
pad
[EXCLUSIVE!] McFARLANE REUNITES WITH 'SPAWN'Image founder Whilce Portacio (Wetworks) gets behind the wheel to drive the book in that new artistic direction with McFarlane riding shotgun as creative director. The pair work in conjunction with one another—McFarlane often describes the scenes and Portacio pencils in his own twists and turns.

"Having Todd by my side is fantastic because he gives me all the texture he's been trying to place in his stories," said Portacio. "As the artist, I get to say, 'Okay, let me grab all of this stuff that's oozing out of your head and let me see if I could make it visually pleasing.' For me, that's the most fun part."

thanks to Budjette Tan of Alamat ML for this breaking news..-

teka...sa Manila, Philippines ba??? or baka ibang Manila yan.

Q: Do other countries have their own super-hero teams?

Joe Quesada: Chris, of course other countries have
super heroes. We've seen some of the other heroes and
teams that are active worldwide, including Alpha/Omega
Flight in Canada, the Winter Guard in Russia, MI:13 in
the UK (along with the more covert ClanDestine), and
Big Hero 6 in Japan. INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #2 introduces
the Triumph Division, the super-team of Manila, in
just a few short weeks. And S.H.I.E.L.D. is an
international organization, so they operate on a
global scale, though they're mostly funded and staffed
at the executive level by Americans.

CLASSICAL COMICS SCOOP SILVER IPPY WITH THEIR FIRST BOOK

The all-British graphic novel Henry V, has been awarded a Silver Medal at the 2008 Independent Publishers Awards (the “IPPYs”) in America.

This year’s contest attracted a total of 3,175 entries and saw the Original Text Henry V, which was released in November 2007, win runner-up in the Graphic Novel/Drawn Book- Drama/Documentary category.

“The quality of this year's entries has been totally amazing” – Independent Publisher

Chairman of Classical Comics, Clive Bryant said, “We are absolutely delighted to win this award with our first book. To see this dream become a reality, and then to gain recognition for our books has been a truly emotional experience. In fact, we’ve had such a positive response to both Henry V and Macbeth that we’ve increased the number of titles in production”.

Classical Comics’ pioneering multiple text versions of well-loved literature have proven to be a success around the globe, particularly with students and teachers, who welcome this vibrant, colourful way of introducing the classics.

Two further adaptations, Frankenstein and Jane Eyre, are due to be published in September this year; with another five titles being released between October 2008 and January 2009. - www.classicalcomics.com

IPPY Award ceremony May 30th during Book Expo America, LA

Classical Comics are new UK publishers who are creating engaging versions of literary classics, by converting the timeless stories into stunning, full colour graphic novels.

Spearheaded by Clive Bryant, Chairman, following his successful exit from a business start-up, he was joined by Karen Wenborn as Managing Director in May 2007. The core team was cemented when Jo Wheeler became Creative Director soon afterwards.

To quote Clive 'Neither Karen or I have a publishing background, but we're both strong businesspeople, and are probably overly enthusiastic about books, literacy and education. Jo comes from a print background, so we rely on her to make sure the end product is right.'

As well as meeting the criteria of being strong in colour, dynamic in action, vibrant, engaging and exciting, the books have a myriad of applications in education across all ages and skill levels.

The team of scriptwriters include teachers, playwrights and novelists, while the artists range from newspaper stalwarts to Spiderman creators and Eagle award winners.

"I'm fascinated by your approach to the play and its language. I find them gripping, dramatic and, although for me the original Shakespeare is always my reason for turning to these plays, I think that what you are doing in illuminating and making perhaps more lucid, especially for young people, is clever and meaningful."

- Patrick Stewart, Actor

"This is a fun way of getting into the stories. Plays are not meant to be read but to be seen. The illustrations in these books are an easy way of following what is going on.
The genius of Shakespeare is in the language but for some students understanding it can be a struggle. It will be useful for teachers to have three different versions of the text."

- Ian McNeilly, director of the National Association for the Teaching of English

GHG head honcho recruiting Manila artists right now

//www.glasshousegraphics.com/newsupdate_images/DavidCampiti3-17-08%20(Large)%20(Small)%20(WinCE).jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

David Campiti, CEO of Glass House Graphics/Studio Sakka Graphics, is in Manila right now through the 18th of June.  His purpose:  To review, train, and recruit the best undiscovered talent that the Philippines has to offer, to work for the American market for American rates.

Are you an animator, cartoonist, illustrator, or designer who has the talent and skill to make it in the American comics market but haven't had the opportunity?  This is your chance.  David is no longer conducting his big yearly Seminars at the MegaMall, but your opportunities to work with GHG are better than ever.

Just send .jpg samples of your work today to David@glasshousegraphics.com.  (If you need sample plots or scripts to draw from, get them from HERE.)

If you'd rather bring your samples portfolio in person to David, please Email his assistant MicaChua@glasshousegraphics.com to set up an appointment.

There is NO FEE.  David personally reviews all samples and gives honest critiques.  If he loves your work, he will offer you the opprtunity to join GHG.  If you need some training, he will provide that for free, too.   "If enough strong potential talent can be lined up this month, then Wilson Tortosa and I will teach a small, personalized Seminar for hand-picked attendees, FREE OF CHARGE, in mid-June, right in our Caloocan office," David explains.  "Some artists were only making $10 a page in the local Filipino market before they joined us.  Now they're making as much as $300 a page -- sometimes more -- working for USA publishers."

Some of the many successful Filipino artists making their mark in the American market right now include Bong (Star Wars) Dazo, Carlo (Iron Man) Pagulayan, Jeffrey (Iron Man) Huet, Rainier (Thunderbolts) Beredo, Harvey (Ultimate X-Men) Tolibao, Stephen (Wolverine: Origins) Segovia, Lui (Red Sonja) Antonio, and a host of manga artists.  You could be joining them!

Pinoy artists who design, draw, or color for the American market through GHG do NOT have to live in the USA or worry about Passports to travel.  They are able to work from home or in GHG's own large, air-conditioned offices and are paid American rates for their work.

Now is your chance:  Don't by shy.  Don't let it pass you by! ( from : www.glasshousegraphics.com )

Free Comic Book Day Philippines blog report

This is my blog post on what happened at the FCBD

Free comics were given away last Saturday at the Comic Odyssey in Robinsons Galeria, I arrived early in the morning once the mall opens at 10am. I was surprised to see a number of 20 people already outside the store and falling in line, most of them are inside the store checking out some comics bin and some of them bought some back issue comics,. I interview some of the early birds and they are from a group of collectors who are a member of an online forum.

I immediately set up my laptop, camera and microphone, then place my laptop outside the store, I'm using the free wifi access of the mall so its not a problem for me, but the good signal comes from outside the store infront of the entrance. While I placed the camera and microphone on the glass display counter near the entrance, a better view of the whole store. I tested the online broadcast that minute, just experience some wonky connection and after a few minutes, everything is smooth and online.

Thanks to our friend OJ, who went early to help me compose a database of FCBD visitors, and glad that he brought a camera tripod, there we use his tripod for the camera and it was place in a very good view, semi birds eye view.

I just recorded the online video stream, from 10am-2pm, and some of the highlights are available for view in my youtube account. I didn't posted all of the video because some of them runs about a 40-minute footage, were you can see people laughing, talking and getting their free comics.

I really like the idea that we did a countdown from 10 to zero and many people enjoyed it, it was like celebrating Xmas or New year and this time we go to celebrate the love of reading comics. "Welcome to Free Comic book Day" Sandy Sansolis, owner of the Comic Odyssey store, shouted after the countdown and everyone went to scream "Yey!!!" and it was the best part of the event.

I got the idea of broadcasting the FCBD sometime last year, I prepared for it and I am very happy that this year's FCBD online video stream is a big success, got connected from a lot of people and Filipino around the world, just like our friend Homer who is in Cebu and David of Sydney, Australia was there online with other pinoy viewers and David relays his experience about the FCBD in his country that started 4 hours early ( which states that Australia might celebrated it first than here in the Philippines). Also at the online video stream and chat, Tom Pomplum, publisher for Graphic Classics was online and also Anne Timmons artist for "The Dream" of Graphic Classics, both of them wants to see Gerry Alanguilan online and glad that it turn out well, funny to see Gerry's reaction when I told him about Tom and Anne viewing his comic signing sessions with fans. Also great to see some of the online chatters are chatting with Anne Timmons and glad that they get connected in an instant via my online stream and chat for the FCBD day in the Philippines.

Comic book signings started at around 1pm and Gerry Alanguilan, Edgar Tadeo, Budjette Tan and Mico Suayan was there as one of the guest artist, and also there are lot of artist went there to say hi and participated the event, Leinil Yu arrived later that day and also other artists like Jonas Diego, Gilbert Monsanto, Dennis Crisostomo, Gio Paredes, Randy Valiente, Andrew Villar and many more. Comic fans was there and glad that they received some quick sketches, autographs and also commissioned pin up artworks. Budjette Tan distribute limited posters of Trese comics, while Gerry give away some copies of Elmer issue 3 comics.

I was busy that time moderating the chat online and also monitoring the video stream, I just talked to some fans while waiting for my time to leave. And also the effectiveness of the FCBD event is that it attracts a lot of non reading comics individuals who went there too to get some comics, there are kids, mom and dads - in other words -> family members are all there, waiting in the line.

I just can't believe to see that impact of the FCBD, thus it makes the scene here in Manila to host the biggest FCBD event and thanks to Comic Odyssey and glad that Sandy is so prepared for it, also there are other FCBD event that happend in Manila, there were FCBD event at Fullybooked and Druids Keep, some say that there are other stores in Q.C. and Makati who just got their own FCBD event. It was so cool, sad to say that I failed to promote them too, because when I checked the official website of FCBD, only Comic Odyssey was listed there are as one of the official host in the Philippines and I was not aware that they updated the website days before the FCBD May 3, 2008.

Comic Odyssey gave away 3 FCBD exclusives on each visitor, and also 20 pcs. of comics in their back issue bin, and a Graphic Classics for the first 250 visitors. Some say that the FCBD exclusives ran out at 2:30pm, thus making some problem in some visitors who are still lining up. All left at that time were back issues. So some of the visitor accepted the truth that they missed the FCBD exclusives, but were happy to take home some back issues limited to 10 pcs at that time. And also met our pinoy artists who were present that day.

It was a fun event and right now I'm having a concept for making this FCBD bigger next year by helping all comic stores in promoting the joy and fun of reading comics. See you all next year!!!

Philip Tan signs exclusive contract with DC comics

Best known recently for his work on Spawn and Spawn: Godslayer, DC Comics has confirmed for Newsarama that artist Philip Tan has signed an exclusive contract with the company. The length of the contract was
undisclosed.

“This is really about the interest and support DC has shown to me, and how passionate Dan DiDio has been
toward the plans he has for me working with DC Comics,” Tan told Newsarama. “And I really appreciate
that overall. It's one of those things where we talk about the long-term goals for myself and DC, and they
have a real interest in finding the right type of work for me and the projects that will best showcase my
talents. Plus, everyone at DC has been really, really cool welcoming me.”

For Tan, the move to DC is one of finally being able to work on some of his favorite characters. “I grew up
on DC characters and have read them throughout my career, but I never got the chance to work on them
before this,” Tan said. “So this is a great opportunity for me to work on the characters.”

And while the artist is named as one of the handful of pencilers who will be working on May’s DC Universe #0, Tan played coy about his immediate future at DC.

“There are some big things happening in the next year at DC. And I'm very excited to be a part of that. The
project I'm working on really is one of the biggest of my career. I'm more excited than anyone else to
announce this project. Unfortunately, I can't talk about it yet. But now, at least I get to tell people
it's something really cool for DC Comics.”

"Demon's Regret" Offers Fiendishly Clever Twists and Michael Golden Covers!

First time for Brown/Torres/Golden Team-up in tale of Evil vs. Evil

Atlanta--Take some fallen angels, a bit of fire and brimstone, a disgruntled immortal, a plan to out-deceive the Great Deceiver himself; throw in a slew of Michael Golden covers; and you've got the upcoming, highly anticipated mini-series Demon's Regret nailed on a spike.

Germinating in the brain of writer Mitch Brown for over two years, the plot of
Demon's Regret tags along with the 1/3 of the fallen angels who decide to follow Lucifer in rebellion and war with Archangel Michael. But what happens to those angels that choose the path of evil rather than good? No pathway to salvation, no way of turning back once the dye is cast?!

And, what happens if one of those fallen angels--demons--regrets his decision?

The story focuses on
one such angel, Asmodeus, who, although he can never give up his demon status, chooses to assist with the commission of lesser evil to stop greater wrongs as an expression of his anger toward Lucifer. He has done so throughout history....as the reader will soon discover!

But what transpires if/when the
boss discovers the ruse?

With shrewd dialogue and story structure from Brown, the interior art is provided by talented creator Wilfredo Torres, who made his first foray into comics on Terminus Media's series of
Evolution books. After being selected as a Top Ten finalist on Comic Book Resources--CB13, Wilfredo went on to work for Mark Waid on Boom! Studio's limited series, Salem: Queen of Thorns.  His fine line work is an inspired choice to take us into the underworld and beyond.

Cover duties go to comics mastermind Michael Golden, who, with recent work on
Iron Man, Exiles, Heroes for Hire, Wonder Woman, Wolverine, and G.I. Joe, seems a perfect choice to bring some devilish dealings to the Demon's Regret frontage. Touted for his groundbreaking work on The 'Nam, Micronauts, Dr. Strange, Batman, and Nightwing, recent art projects on Golden include such titles as Modern Masters--Michael Golden; Modern Masters: In the Studio with Michael Golden DVD; Excess The Art of Michael Golden, (going into a second printing), and the upcoming Creator Chronicles: Michael Golden Sketch Cover DVD.

Published by Digital Webbing,
Demon's Regret is a unique anti-hero tale that fits in nicely with Digital Webbing's themed books such as "Bloodrayne" and "Bleeders," while also reminding us of some other anti-heroes in the comics lexicon who too sometimes use evil to combat evil... Unlike the guy with the skull on his chest and the AK47, however, Asmodeus has no choice.

Come along for the riveting ride!
