"Vicnel Ann Napolereyes and Rainier Factuar both senior Broadcast Communication majors from the Division of Humanities of the College of Arts and Sciences talked about the social and political realities reflected in Hiligaynon Komiks at the Student Paper Presentation on 18th February 2008 at the Interactive Learning Center of UPV Miagao.

Their study focuses on the two-page Hiligaynon Komiks found in Hiligaynon Magazine from the year 1998 to 2000. It aims to identify the social and political realities reflected in their selections, determine the prevalent social and political realities, discuss the realities found in the komiks, and know the relationship of the komiks

American Komikeros- The Documentary's Blurbs

thanks to Budj for the twitter news :)
I haven't seen yet a documentary film about Filipino komiks, I guess this might be the first that will start it all.
I was told by Alfredo Alcala Jr.  about an old documentary film about our Filipino artists and it features a great interview
with our comic artist masters, but too bad that there's no other copy of the film. Also I saw a short documentary and interview with Tony Velasquez, comic creator of Kenkoy komiks in Knowledge Channel, I sent them a note years ago to replay it, but its sad that I haven't receive any reply from them. But the docu film American Komikeros is a great start to archive it and save it for future references.

American Komikeros ©2007, LeRoid E. David

For over 30 years, hundreds of Filipino comic book artists (also known as "komikeros"), from major to independent publishers, have been contributing their amazing talents to the American comic book industry. Beginning in the early 1970s, Tony DeZuniga became the first Filipino artist to break into the American market starting with DC Comics; he is the co-creator of DC's Jonah Hex and Black Orchid. Tony also led the first wave of Filipino immigrants to work for American comic books.

Get to know his story along with many other fellow Komikeros- Alex Nino, Ernie Chan, Danny Bulandi, Whilce Portacio, Philip Tan, and Leinil Francis Yu. This short documentary project will introduce some of the history and profiles of these underappreciated Filipino artists, past and present, America and abroad. Plus insight from some of today's biggest names in the comic book industry- Frank Cho, Mark Wheatley, Jose Villarrubia, Brian Philippson, Alex Saviuk, and more!

Directed and Produced by LeRoid David with Matthew Abaya.

Hans Bacher "Dream Worlds" Book Signing at Fully Booked

I just saw this event posted in Facebook and I'm interested to check it out and also meet the artist.
I don't know personally or familiar with the name Hans Bacher, but the animation and movies he worked on as a production designer really made me interested to come and see him at the event. These animation give inspiration to me during my youngling days, from Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Lion King, Fantasy and many other animated movies.

"While we're on the subject of Wonder heroes and heroines, let's take another trip abroad — this time to the Philippines, where we'll meet penciler Noah Salonga (known here as the artist on the Xena: Warrior Princess series published by Dynamite Entertainment) and inker Ernest Jocson (best known as the inking half of the artistic team on IDW's recent revival of Mike W. Barr's Maze Agency). Noah and Ernest pair up for this exciting battle scenario pitting my favorite Amazon against a nasty-looking robot assassin.

As I discovered when my family spent two years there in the mid-1970s, the Philippines enjoy a rich comic book history. The country's homegrown comics industry — called komiks in Filipino culture — has produced an incredible wealth of talent, a tradition that continues to this day. Salonga and Jocson are but two members of a new generation of Filipino comic artists emerging from the legacy of such legendary creators as Francisco Coching, Alfredo Alcala, Tony DeZuniga, Ernie Chan, Nestor Redondo, and a host of others.

Ah, the wonders of comic art: one of the simple pleasures that make the world a happier, more beautiful place.

And that's your Comic Art Friday."

Redondo Komiks delayed for a moment

Last time, I have posted a blog update about the Redondo Komiks 2008 edition. As I heard the news the comics will be available this February 2008. But then I emailed Dennis Redondo to confirm and get a preview page or cover for the comics, he just told me that the release will be a bit delayed and he will inform me after the comics are being printed. As of now they are still into editorial stuff and are now finalizing the pages to be printed. Thats a good news to hear and I'm so excited to grab one.

Can't tell more about it, but I just saw pages of a sci fi title of Redondo Komiks, and it was superb!
The comics will have 3-4 stories and will be printed in full color with glossy pages.

"Rated B is exactly what its title says--a B Comic.

It doesn't have a rock solid selling point, nor is it intended to have one. The author, BJ David, treats this as more of a visual journal. This is were he puts down the humorous things that happens in his life and the life of some of the RUNWay crew.

Ang Pakikipaglaban at mga Kamalasan ni V-Boy

Just saw this web komiks while surfing around in multiply.com. "Ang Pakikipaglaban at mga Kamalasan ni V-Boy" is an adventure of Rey in school, space and with the alien race where he got his super bionic powers, In this issue I dont know yet if he is a superhero or just a plain happy go lucky student. Alien with breast head, Red UFO, sex organ headed friend and weird comrades. This indie web komiks is not suitable for young readers.  In other words.. FOR ADULTS ONLY.

the komiks is very funny.. well for a guy like me, can relate so much on the jokes and visuals of this comics.
there's a warning in the 2nd page of it, and it says that it contains mature content.

I'm wishing for a printed version or a 2nd issue series.

Fil-Canadian J.TORRES' new project - "THE FAMILY DYNAMIC"

just saw Budj's twitter post today and I'm sharing you this international comics news about Fil-Canadian J.TORRES' new comics project.

--

The image “http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/7930/family1t738f0ns5.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

As we mentioned in our coverage on Saturday from DC’s RRP meeting, J. Torres will launch a new six issue miniseries in June titled The Family Dynamic. In this case, the title’s a pretty accurate descriptor – Torres’ Family Dynamic is just that – a family of super-heroes.

We spoke with Torres to find out more about the miniseries.

Newsarama: J., let's start on the ground floor. What is The Family Dynamic in your words?

J. Torres: Well, the first thing I should say is that while Dan announced it at RRP this weekend at the same time as DCU #0, Trinity, etc. no, Family Dynamic isn't part of those "big events." It's a "big event" in my life, and I'm thankful for the attention and exposure it's getting because of this weekend's other DC announcements, but sorry no, it's not about the Marvel Family as some fans have speculated and even e-mailed me about. I want to thank Dan for including us in all of those exciting announcements and I hope retailers and fans are taking note. I like to see our inclusion in all of that as a certain show of confidence in the project and that Dan's telling everyone to buy this book. Look, they even priced DCU #0 at fifty cents so you'd all have money left over to buy Family Dynamic #1. [laughs]

That said, Family Dynamic is a six-issue miniseries I'm working on with Tim Levins (penciller), Dan Davis (inker), Dave McCaig (colorist), and Adam Schlagman (editor). It's quite a "big event" for me because it's my first creator owned book at DC, plus it's a "reunion project" for me and Tim as we started out in comics together many years ago on a comic called Copybook Tales. Back then we were a couple of college students trying to break into the industry with a minicomic about comic book wannabes, and now we're both married with a kid each and working together on a miniseries about a superhero family. It comes full circle rather nicely...

The Death and Life of the Komiks

Forwarded by Sir Vim Nadera from the artforum ML. Its an article about the Komiks Symposium last year at the Pasko ng Komiks. If you missed the Pasko ng Komiks event, you can visit my coverage here with photos and video.

----

The Death and Life of the Komiks

Article by : Emil M. Flores

It all began with death. But death was to be denied. On December 11, 2007 the College of Arts and Letters of the University of the Philippines in Diliman, the Likhaan Creative Writing Center and Read or Die convened “Pasko ng Komiks” the first ever gathering of creators, collectors and academe on the “literature of the masses,” the komiks. Amidst the statements that the komiks were dead, the symposium speakers begged to differ. The komiks are alive. The creators may not be properly recognized or compensated, but the komiks are alive. Institutions may not see them worthy to be preserved and archived but the komiks are alive.

The pronouncements began with National Artist and College of Arts and Letters dean Virgilio Almario questioning komiks’ demise and reaffirming the art form’s importance to Philippine culture and society.

While the komiks were alive, all was not well. The first session was moderated by Prof. Michael Chua and Sally Eugenio and it began with a fairly troublesome note.

The first speaker Gerry Alanguilan recalled his early career in komiks. He lamented how the industry itself does not encourage creativity. One publisher he approached in 1992 told him that he didn’t have to make his work look good since it was only for local readers. The low opinion of the publishers for its readers had a way of bouncing back. Eventually the readers developed a low opinion of the komiks. The opinion was so low that according to Alanguilan, the National Library deemed that komiks had no research value and were thus not preserved. Because of this lack of preservation, Alanguilan lamented how many young artists do not know the creators from the 1940s. Ironically, many of the past creators took pride in their work and put their hearts and souls into them. To counter the sad state of komiks, Alanguilan continues to preserve the komiks works from the past in his online museum at komikero.com.

One of the great komiks creators from the 1930s to the 1970s was Francisco Coching. UP Art Studies professor Patrick Flores spoke of the importance of Coching’s work in Philippine society. Coching, who chose to be a komiks artist rather than a painter, influenced many Filipino artists. In fact, according to Flores, many artists in the provinces learned their human anatomy drawing through the Francisco Coching komiks since art books were not available to them. Through his works such as Pedro Penduko, Hagibis and Lapu Lapu, Flores stated that Francisco Coching helped shape the face of the Filipino in the 1950s and 60s.

Komiks writer Gladys Gimena outlined the types of stories that are prominent in the komiks namely: drama (Bituing Walang Ningning), love (Sinasamba Kita), mystery and horror (Bangungot), fantasy (Zuma), hero-oriented (Darna), action (Bad Boy), true-to-life and political propaganda, and children’s educational komiks. From the types of stories given, Gimena showed how diverse the komiks were in terms of content. The komiks were not ruled by a single dominant genre and that demonstrated the medium’s significance to Philippine society.

Legendary creator Pablo Gomez shared his experiences as a komiks creator and as a writer for film. At one pint in his talk he lamented the lack of respect older creators like him get from the creators who came after him. He simply lets his work speak for themselves, a valuable lesson for the future komiks creators.

Collectors Dennis Villegas and Orvy Jundis showed samples of rare komiks and stressed the importance of preserving them for future readers. Jundis, a Filipino American noted how many Filipino artists who worked in the United States such as Nestor Redondo and Alfredo Alcala were highly respected in the American comics scene. American artist such as Al Williamson were even influenced by Francisco Coching.

The afternoon session, with Prof. Vim Nadera and Sally Eugenio acting as moderators, further expanded the scope of discussion.
The first session featured women komiks creators Ofelia Concepcion, Vivian Limpin, Gilda Olivado, Joanah Tinio-Calingo, Elizabeth Chionglo, Syeri Baet and Claire Villacorta. The impressive assembly demonstrated that women despite the challenges they have faced have made an indelible mark in the various forms of komiks: the komiks magasin, newspaper strips, and indie comics.

More creators were featured in the second session. These were Carlo Vergara, Andrew Drilon, Andrew Villar, Randy Valiente, Jonas Diego, Melvin Calingo, Rey Tiempo, Victor Balanon and KC Cordero. While Randy Valiente pointed out the problems that the komiks industry faced such as the monopoly in publishing and the unfair treatment of the creators, the panelist themselves demonstrated that a new breed of komiks creators were looking at alternative venues such as the Internet to present their creativity. Creators such as Melvin Calingo showed that an alternate source of inspiration can come from Japanese manga and anime. Andrew Drilon has created komiks based on video games. Carlo Vergara’s Zsa Zsa Zaturnnah has been made into a live musical production as well as a feature film. Komiks may be struggling but the eclectic group of creators showed that all was not lost.

The final panelists Emil Flores, Romulo Baquiran, Lawrence Mijares and Boboy Yonzon reinstated the importance of komiks in Philippine art, history and culture. The challenges are great the panelists noted but the possibilities are endless and exciting.

Throughout the symposium video presentations of seminal komiks series were presented by Filipiniana.net. The presentations of Carlo J. Caparas’ Ang Panday, Gilda Olivado’s Babangon Ako at Dudurugin Kita, and Carlo Vergara’s Zsa Zsa Zaturnnah provided were wonderful examples of how the komiks reflected Filipino culture through stories filled with action, drama, humor and heroism.
In his closing statement National Artist Bienvinido Lumbera stated that the times have changed for the komiks. The komiks are not as ubiquitous as they once were but they are taking new forms in content, art styles and inspiration. But as the symposium clearly demonstrated, the komiks are not dead. The komiks are changing and they must be preserved so that all of us can experience that the wonder and excitement that they provide.

The Crucible Launches Malang Comic Book

I was in SM Megamall yesterday and I just a Malang comics and cartoon exhibit inside The Crucible and then I asked for a press release of the exhibit just to inform everyone about the event. And then I found out that they also published a Malang comic book, priced at P350. Which I will grab it this Monday, so excited to know about this and even that I missed the exhibit and opening in Art Center, this is a second chance for me to see and appreciate Malang's cartoon and comics creations. You can view a photo set of the exhibit here

Press Release

The Crucible Launches Malang Comic Book

Long Before he became one of the Philippines’ most acclaimed painters, Malang enjoyed a “past life” as a cartoonist. From the 1940s to the 1960s, he created cartoon characters and comic strips that were widely followed in such publications as the Chronicle, This Week magazine and Weekly Graphic.

A sampling of Malang’s prolific output as a cartoonist is now gathered in the comic book “The Forgotten Malang: A Career in Cartoons”. Published by The Cubicle Workshop, it will be launched on Jan. 23, 6pm., at The Crucible Gallery which is also opening an exhibit of the artist’s cartoons that runs until Feb 10.

The comic book and exhibit feature selections of the various cartoon series that Malang drew such as : Kosme the Cop, the adventures of a city policeman as he walk his beat; Chain-Gang Charlie, the convict who has a thousand and one uses for his ball and chain; and Malang’s Menagerie, a humorous look at life in the city and barrio.

In the comic book, there are also editorial cartoons, illustration for legal columns and spot cartoons. It also shares little-known trivia about Malang, among them, that he opened The Bughouse, the country’s first cartoon gallery, along with several artist-colleagues in 1955.

“The Forgotten Malang” comic book, with text provided by Susan A. de Guzman and Giselle P. Kasilag, is a spin-off of the exhibition of the same title held last year which they also conceptualized.

By tracing Malang’s artistic roots, the comic book re-introduces Malang to the public, particularly younger audiences, and shows how these roots helped prepare him for his eventual transition into a full-time painter.

Malang affirms that his 20-year cartooning experience honed his graphic skill, while having a daily deadline taught him to be disciplined and to be more observant of things that went on around him which he used as sources of ideas of cartoons.

Decades later, many of these pieces remain just as amusing as when they were first drawn for a different generation of readers, thus providing the lasting appeal of the visual pun and the timeless humor of the artist who made it his specialty.

The Crucible Gallery is located at the 4th Level, SM Megamall bulding A, in Mandaluyong City. For inquiries, call 635-6061.

Comic Book Hero Spreads Counterterrorism Message
By Stew Magnuson

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — One of the unique products used in psychological operations in the southern Philippines is the comic book “Barbargsa — Blood of the Honorable.”

About 600,000 copies of the 10-part series have been distributed on the Sulu islands, a chain that was once a terrorist safe haven, and still suffers from skirmishes.

U.S. special operations forces have used comic books in information campaigns. But the characters were based on well-known American superheroes. Two years ago, two Army officers decided to create one from scratch to tell the children of the Sulu islands the story of what was happening in their homeland.

The project was the brainchild of Maj. Edward Lopacienski, military information support team commander for the joint special operations task force Philippines mission, and the non-commissioned officer in charge, Master Sgt. Russell Snyder.

The pair sat down in January 2006 and outlined the basic idea.

The plot follows several basic comic book storyline conventions — most notably the battle between good and evil.

The comic book focuses on Ameer, who left his home island to work overseas, but returns to find it racked with violence. Ameer is a practitioner of kuntao, which is a local form of martial arts. Like Zorro or Batman, he dons a mask and vows to protect the downtrodden and innocent victims of terrorists.

The Philippines military are also portrayed in a positive and heroic light while the villains are the terrorists or “bandits.” The creators were careful to accurately illustrate the Sulu region, and use character names, clothing and mannerisms that reflect the culture of the Tausug ethnic group. There are versions in English and in the local dialect.

It depicts real events that took place on the islands and at neighboring Basilan — specifically the Sulu Co-Op bombing in March 2006, which killed five and injured 40 and the Basilan hostage crisis when members of the Abu Sayyaf Group took school children and used them as human shields against Filipino troops.

“Essentially what we’re doing is showing all the atrocities that the Abu Sayyaf Group has done,” Lopacienski said.

One subplot shows how terrorists manipulate a boy into becoming a bomber.

Animating Philippine Literature

got this from the Alamat ML, thanks to Budj for the link

(an excerpt)

A work titled Ang Kagilagilalas na Pakikipagsapalaran ni Zsazsa Zaturnnah (The Amazing Adventures of Zsazsa
Zaturnnah) deserves special mention, because of its runaway success in several versions—first, as a comic
book by the artist Carlo Vergara in 2002, then a stage musical in 2006, and finally as a movie in 2006.
Before the musical even opened, all 16 shows had been sold out—an unprecedented feat in Philippine theater.
All three versions—comic book, musical, and movie—won critical acclaim. The lesson here? Update and adapt
material for new times, themes, and audiences.

Zsazsa Zaturnnah is also unusual in that it was one of the relatively few cases where a work that had
succeeded in print moved on to the stage and then to  the movies. Very few Filipino stories, novels, or
plays ever make it to the movies, with the occasional exception of popular novels serialized in the komiks
magazines. An incipient independent film industry has emerged, with many young talents drawn from art,
literature, and music, but its market, as yet, remains severely limited.

Caparas Komiks in full color - review by John Becaro

Here's a review and commentary by our buddy John Becaro, he posted a review in his deviantart journal and I was surprised to see that the full colored comics is already out, and I haven't visited my favorite news stand store to pick up a new copy of the isssue. Its the 7th issue of the Caparas Komiks series and I know everyone is curious on what Caparas and Sterling publication brought a new addition to its comics.

CJC- STERLING KOMIKS IN COLOR
A brief Komiks Review and Commentary

I used to read and buy Komiks when I was 10years old. My highschool years is the highlights of my addiction on filipino komiks. It was just also later that I was more exposed to Western,Chinese and Japanese Comics. My first love was the real
pinoy komiks, way back I was thrilled on reading Nosferata, Devil Car and so many more. My favorite komiks then is Fantasy and Space Horror in which I really have this nostalgic feeling when I remember such titles.I miss them. Sonic Triangle and Infinity Komiks Publishing are also one of those last holders of Komiks that I used to read.Bata Batuta Komiks, Funny Komiks, Kick Fighter Komiks, Komedi Komiks, Kidlat Komiks and Terminator Komiks are also the Komiks I always used to buy and collect while the others, I just went and rent to a komiksstand--a noble addict komiks reader and fan.

In this article I would like to talk about the latest development of the Caparas- Sterling Komiks that primarily aims to bring back Komiks in a nationwide distribution system. I waited for the colored version first before I made my own commentary about their product.
They have 5 titles which were Estudyante Komiks, OFW Komiks, Super Funny Komiks, Gwapo Komiks and Klasik Komiks. Sad To say, the titles were not consistent and not fully related on their inside stories. I'll review them not one by one, but by picking
some parts of each title.

FULL COLOR
It's now the 7th issue after a temporary halt of distribution during last year.Still using a print paper but now in colors.OFW Komiks didn't made it to the full color perhaps because of the time element.
